Victim Of Brutal Brazil Gang Rape Speaks Out, ‘They Tried To Incriminate Me, As If It Was My Fault I Was Raped’

The 16-year-old victim of a brutal gang rape in Brazil has spoken out about the incident, condemning police officers and victim-shamers who are trying to pin the blame on her, rather than on the dozens men who drugged and raped her at gunpoint.

Earlier this month, the young unnamed girl was the victim of a savage gang rape in the slums of Brazil that included at least 33 men, many of whom were armed, according to the girl who recently spoke out in an interview with CNN affiliate TV Record. With her lawyer at her side, and her face blurred out in order to remain anonymous, the 16-year-old Brazil native recounted the terrifying ordeal, saying that on May 21, she had gone to visit her boyfriend in one of many slums in Brazil. The next thing she remembers, she says, is waking up the following day in another house, naked and surrounded by around three dozen men, CNN reports.

“I fell asleep and woke up in a completely different place, with a man under me, one on top of me and two holding me down, on my hands. Many people laughing at me, and I was drugged, out of it. Many people with guns, boys laughing and talking.”

A 38-second video of the gang rape was later uploaded to social media sites by one of the attackers. The video and images related to the gang rape quickly went viral, with people around the world condemning the actions of the men, and calling for justice for the young victim. As tends to happen when it comes to rape, however, there were those who also blamed the victim, saying it was her fault for being in the Brazil slum in the first place. According to the Washington Post, even the police officer who was originally leading the investigation began asking her inappropriate questions — such as whether the minor was in the habit of engaging in group sex — which caused her to terminate the police interview.

“They tried to incriminate me, as if it was my fault I was raped.

“These are women saying that I looked for this, that I was there because I wanted to. But nobody thinks, ‘It could have been me.’ Nobody deserves this. It doesn’t matter if I was wearing short clothes or longer clothes, it doesn’t matter where I was.”

The male police officer in question has since been removed from the case, and replaced by Christiana Bento, police chief for crimes against minors, who is in the process of collecting evidence to see the men involved in this horrendous gang rape pay for their crimes. At a news conference on Monday, Bento did her part to silence detractors and, stating matter-of-factly that she wholly believed the victim had been gang raped, and that she plans to “present a robust case” to the prosecutor’s office.

Unfortunately, as sexual crimes against women — such as this gang rape perpetrated by at least three dozen men — are commonplace in Brazil, and often go unpunished, the young victim doesn’t hold the justice system in high regard.

“If I have to wait for the justice system, they’ve already shown that nothing is going to happen. I am waiting for the justice of God. That might be late but it never fails.”

The 16-year-old victim of the brutal Brazil gang rape also said that if it weren’t for the support she’s received from family, friends, and the world-at-large, she wouldn’t be as strong as she is right now. The shame of being a victim of gang rape almost led her to not report it, but, she says, she is happy that she did, and with the words of support from the public, the 16-year-old knows she is not alone.

So far, four men have been arrested in Brazil for participating in the gang rape of the minor.
