Snoop Dogg Says To Boycott ‘Roots’ Revival, Get High Instead

Apparently, Snoop Dogg is already not a big fan of the Roots revival. The rapper took to Instagram on Monday, May 31, to speak out against the History channel’s four-part, eight-hour revival of the classic miniseries that originally aired on TV in 1977, which was based on the 1976 book.

In an expletive NSFW rant, Snoop Dogg, 44, says that he is tired of black people being portrayed as slaves. He was also not happy to hear that the miniseries premiered on Memorial Day, of all days. He then questioned America’s obsession with making films or shows about slavery.

12 Years a Slave, Roots, Underground, I can’t watch none of that shit. I’m sick of this shit. How the f*** are they gonna put Roots on Memorial Day? They gonna just keep beating this s*** in our heads of how they did us, huh?” he said in the video that he posted.

“I don’t understand America. They just want to keep showing the abuse that we took hundreds and hundreds of years ago. But, guess what? We taking the same abuse?” he concluded.

Snoop Dogg went on to say that he would like to see a TV series, or a major film like 12 Years a Slave, that doesn’t focus on the abuse and pain that African Americans have suffered from hundreds of years ago. Little does Snoop Dogg know, slavery still exists today in other parts of the world.

“When all you going to make a motherf***ing series about the success black folks is having? The only success we have is Roots and 12 Years a Slave and s*** like that, huh? F*** y’all. I ain’t watching that s***. F*** them television shows. Let’s create our own s*** based on today, how we live, and how we inspire people today.”

LeVar Burton, who played Kunta Kinte in the original miniseries and is the executive producer of the revival, previously told People that he hopes this new version will spark some much-needed debate and conversation about today’s ongoing issues with race.

“I’m hoping we can create a conversation about race that is absent fear, anger, guilt and shame, and just deal honestly with what continues to hold us back. This is an opportunity.”

But instead of talking about important issues, Snoop Dogg would rather smoke weed with his fans. As previously reported on Tucson.com, Dogg took the stage at the AVA at the Casino del Sol on Thursday night, May 26. He was an hour late because he didn’t want to get on stage until it was just a few seconds before his performance.

During his hour-long performance, the rapper played a medley of his hit songs like “Gin and Juice,” and talked about his favorite subject: smoking weed.

“How many of you have smoking with the Dogg on your bucket list?” he asked in his signature smooth voice as the crowd cheered. “We got to get this legalized. When it’s time to vote, you all got to vote so we can legalize this.”

Then Dogg played his song, “Smoke Weed Everyday,” before asking his fans to sign petitions to make marijuana legal on the next election ballot. He ended his show with the marijuana movement’s national anthem, “Young, Wild & Free,” a.k.a. the “So What We Get Drunk Song.” Dogg also revealed that he recorded a few years ago with fellow rapper and marijuana lover Wiz Khalifa.

“I want to end on a positive note,” he said, then screamed into his mic: “Smoke weed motherf******!”

So, what’s it really like to smoke weed with Snoop Dogg? A lucky couple from Georgia won an all-expense paid trip to Denver to smoke weed with the rapper at the Merry Jane 420 Wellness Retreat. Wanda and Wiggle received a “survival kit,” which contained several copies of Snoop’s Bush album, Leafs by Snoop, and merchandise from his Merry Jane store.

At 4:20 exact, of course, it was time to head off to the VIP and have a meet-and-greet with Snoop Dogg himself. Wiggle was particularly excited about meeting Dogg for the first time since he’s a huge fan of the rapper.
