‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 8: Nina Dobrev Ian Somerhalder Reunion Confirmed

Ever since the split of The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev, viewers have started speculating if they will again share the same screen. Earlier this year, The CW officially announced that The Vampire Diaries will return to the network for an eighth season. Now, series showrunner Julie Plec has finally shed the light of the reunion of Dobrev and Somerhalder on the series.

In an interview with TV Line, Plec stated that Dobrev is currently pursuing her career outside the fantasy drama show, but it would be fun to bring her back in the series.

“In my opinion, she was very clear about what she wanted the next step in her life to be, and she’s doing a great job of achieving that. So I’m sticking with my side of the plan, which is to bring her back at the very end.”

The Vampire Diaries premiered on September 10, 2009, and it featured a fictional small town in Virginia that is haunted by supernatural beings like vampires, werewolves, and witches. The story followed the series protagonist, Elena Gilbert (Dobrev), as she falls heads over heels with a vampire, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). As the story progressed, Gilbert finds herself falling for Stefan’s brother, Damon Salvatore (Somerhalder). The chemistry of Elena and Damon was praised by the fans. However, after three years of dating, the duo parted ways in 2013.

Dobrev left TVD after Season 6 in 2015 due to her other commitments, but to create the hype, her voice was featured in the last episode of Season 7. Her voice cameo did confirm her return to the show, but now a source close to the series confirmed to Hollywood Life that she is surely returning to the series along with her ex-boyfriend.

“When the show ends Nina will be a part of it some way shape or form. She is 10,000 percent coming back.”

There still no update on how or when the series’ leads will be seen sharing the screen again, but the insider added that it is all up to Dobrev and Somerhalder as when they want to make their comeback.

“The show did so much for their careers and put them on the map. For Julie Plec and the other writers and creators. They feel like they owe it to them to suck it up and send the show off any way they want to send it off.”

Well, one might wonder what Nikki Reed will think about her beau’s reunion with his celebrated ex-girlfriend. The insider further added that Reed is fine with that, as she understands the gravity of the character her husband plays on the show.

“Nikki and Ian are so in love. There’s nothing he could possibly do to upset her. The idea of Ian and Nina reuniting on screen for The Vampire Diaries doesn’t bother her one bit. She has no issues with this whatsoever.”

The makers of The Vampire Diaries created its spinoff, The Originals, and there were reports that fans will get to see some major crossovers in the series. In an interview with E News, Plec stated that the since the TVD and The Originals belong from the same universe, there are lots of subplots that can be created. She further stated that in The Originals, fans are going to see how Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Elijah (Daniel Gillies) became vampires, and how Dobrev’s character is important for the same.

“So Nina Dobrev will be visiting The Originals for a nice little storyline in our fifth episode which airs November 3.”

Season 8 of The Vampire Diaries is set to air this coming fall on The CW. Whether this will be the last season featuring Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder is still not clear, but fans are hoping to see their favorite characters reuniting for one last time.
