Angela Paton, ‘Groundhog Day’ And ‘The Wedding Singer’ Actress, Dead At 86

Actress Angela Paton, known for appearing in such movies as Groundhog Day and The Wedding Singer, has died at the age of 86.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Paton passed away Thursday in Oakland, California. The report states that the longtime actress had been in hospice care after suffering a heart attack recently. The news of her passing was confirmed by Angela’s nephew George Woolf.

The majority of Angela’s acting career consisted of supporting roles and memorable appearances on the stage, television and movie screen. She was never nominated for a Golden Globe or Oscar, but the longevity of her career and extensive list of credits speak volumes about her overall accomplishments in Hollywood.

Angela Paton reportedly accumulated over 90 acting credits in television and film. One of her most memorable performances was in the classic 1993 film Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray. Paton played Mrs. Lancaster, an elderly innkeeper that greeted Murray’s character day after day during his never-ending repetitive day throughout the movie.

Another popular movie that featured an appearance by Angela Paton was the 1998 film The Wedding Singer starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore in their first romantic comedy together.

Paton played Faye, a clever businesswoman in the wedding industry that tried to escape a tough negotiation with Sandler’s character when working out a deal for Barrymore’s character’s wedding.

Perhaps her most memorable line from the film was when she tried to compare their “relationship” with the successful bonds of celebrity couples in the 80s that seemed as if they would last as well.

“Can I say something? I deal with a lot of people, but you two look truly happy. You’re gonna make it. I know. Believe me.
How do you know? You can just look at a couple and you can tell right away they’re gonna stay together forever. Like Donald and Ivana [Trump]…and Woody [Allen] and Mia [Farrow]…and Burt [Reynolds] and Loni [Anderson].”

Quite a few people have posted their responses and reactions to Angela’s death on Twitter — including actors and actresses that worked with or were inspired by the longtime actress.

The official Star Trek website paid tribute to Angela Paton Friday by reminding fans and critics of her guest star appearance in the pilot episode of Star Trek: Voyager series. The episode, titled “Caretaker,” first aired January 16, 1995 and featured Angela as “Aunt Adah.”

Angela Paton worked with her husband Bob Goldsby as founders and operators of the Berkeley Stage Company, according to the SFGate.

She also appeared in such films as Trapped in Paradise, Eye for an Eye, The Joyriders, Joe Dirt, American Wedding, and Red Eye.

In addition to her career on the small screen and television, Angela Paton enjoyed a long career as an actress on the stage as well. According to the Hollywood Reporter, she appeared in a 2012 run of “Harvey” on the Broadway stage.
