‘The Flash’ Season 3 Might Take ‘Flashpoint’/’Flashpoint Paradox’ Storyline, Adding Black Flash As Disruption

The Flash Season 3 starts this fall after mixed reactions from the Season 2 finale. The next season of The Flash will likely ramp things into overdrive by pulling from major comic book lore, even going fully into the universe-disrupting Flashpoint story.

If you haven’t seen the Season 2 finale, you may want to skip this analysis. If you want to know how what you see relates to the comics, then please read on.

The whole big event in DC Comics that DC is now somewhat reversing during the new Rebirth event took place from the events of Flashpoint. So if the TV series goes in this direction, it could lead to many character surprises. It depends how deep show producers want to enter comic book territory.

Flashpoint brought a different kind of Batman, and set a different superhero paradigm into play within the DC Universe. That could majorly wreak havoc with all sorts of timelines, but the finale of Season 2 has already gotten the ball rolling. The producers will probably present a milder version of that story for The Flash Season 3 since they can’t disrupt things beyond what a TV watcher can keep track of.

The appearance of Black Flash is also a sign that some big event is looming that will affect one of the Speed Force characters. The show could have just thrown Black Flash in as an Easter egg, but it could also be a premonition of tragedy yet to arrive. The theory has it that when Black Flash arrives, he is there to take a speedster away and disperse him or her back into the speed force.

In the Flashpoint storyline, Bruce Wayne is the one killed while his father, Thomas Wayne, lives. The Thomas Wayne Batman is a ruthless, brutal Batman, but he ultimately aids Barry closely. No one is sure how likely they are to put Batman in there next season, or any other Justice League member.

ComicBook.com quoted an interview of Cisco actor Carlos Valdes, who spoke at MegaCon in Orlando about Season 3.

“All I’m going to tell you is things are going to be different, way different.”

He basically wouldn’t get more specific than that, but ComicBook.com also quoted him talking a bit further about how different things would be.

“Not in a bad way; I think in a really exciting way, and it’s that difference that’s going to inform Barry’s trajectory throughout the season, and I think people are going to like it.”

In the same Flashpoint storyline, Aquaman and Wonder Woman are at war. All changes to the DC Universe in Flashpoint are a result of Barry saving his mother, and therefore changing everything else. The Flash is struggling to find out how to make things better again, which eventually leads to the permanent changes that come in DC’s The New 52.

All rumors point to Flashpoint, but the form and depth and relation to the comic book story are unknown. Things could go in a totally different direction. Flashpoint could happen, but just be a smaller part of the larger story arc. That arc may consist of major explorations of Earth-3.

During an interview with TV Line, John Wesley Shipp revealed that he doesn’t know much about what the screenwriters have planned for the next season of The Flash, but he gave hints about what he would like to see happen based on how things have unfolded.

“The only thing I know about Earth-Three is what I gathered from the comics, that that’s where Jay Garrick is, that that’s where these old villains go. Indeed, that’s what happens at the end of our finale — Zoom turns into Black Flash and goes off to Earth-Three, so I’ll be very interested when we get to the point of exploring exactly what Earth-Three is like and how close they’ll stay to the comics.”

The Flash Season 3 will begin next fall. Enjoy the flurry of different theories on what will happen in the meantime.
