Johnny Depp’s Movie ‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’ Is Bombing Amidst Domestic Abuse Allegations– Is He To Blame?

Johnny Depp has a movie in theaters right now but you probably wouldn’t have missed that if you’ve been on the internet in the last couple of days. First, the news of Depp’s divorce from actress Amber Heard overshadowed promotion efforts for Alice Through The Looking Glass.

Now things have gotten a lot more serious. On Friday, Amber Heard went to court with bruises on her face and told a judge that Johnny Depp had physically assaulted her. She also claimed that Depp had repeatedly abused her during their marriage.

According to TMZ, who broke the story, the court issued a restraining order against Johnny Depp and awarded her the right to continue living in their home. However, he denied her request for court protection for one of their dogs and her request for $50k per month in spousal support. TMZ reports that Amber went to court with photos of bruises she claims Depp inflicted on her.

US Weekly reports that Alice Through the Looking Glass is already struggling at the box office. The film had a $170 million budget, but it’s set to only take in $40 million during Memorial Day weekend. The film is a sequel to 2010’s Alice in Wonderland which racked up $116 million in ticket sales during its opening weekend. In Looking Glass, Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter again and Mia Wasikowska reprises her role as Alice.

As US Weekly notes, the film hasn’t fared well with movie reviewers. Rotten Tomatoes, the movie review aggregator, gave the film a 29% approval rating. X-Men Apocalypse is expected to be the movie juggernaut this weekend and take in $90 million.

This is just another film title we can add to a list of box-office flops that Johnny Depp has been a part of such as 2013’s Lone Ranger, 2014’s Transcendence, and 2015’s Mortdecai. He did, however, get some reprieve from critics for his portrayal of Whitey Bulger in Black Mass.

The news of Amber Heard’s spousal abuse claims obviously won’t help the already struggling Alice Through The Looking Glass.

The Wrap reports that Johnny Depp’s defense revolves around claims that Amber is making these domestic violence claims in an effort to get more money out of the Pirates Of The Caribbean actor.

“Amber is attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse,” legal documents filed by Depp’s lawyer, Laura Wasser, read.

According to The Wrap, Laura Wasser’s documents also stated that Amber Heard “is a successful model and actress who earns her own income and is capable of supporting herself. Although Amber is entitled to seek support, fees and property orders, Johnny is likewise entitled to reasonable time to prepare his response.”

TMZ reports that Amber brought photo evidence of bruises that she claims resulted from a domestic violence incident between her and Depp on May 21. According to TMZ, the police were called but when they arrived they found no evidence of injuries and Amber declined to file a police report.

Amber now claims that she struck her with a phone which caused the bruises on her face. Based on the court documents that TMZ quotes, she’s blaming Depp’s abusive behavior on his addiction to drugs and alcohol. In her court documents, Heard claims that Johnny Depp came to her birthday party “inebriated and high” and that they had an argument after the party was over during which Depp threw a wine bottle and wine glass at her. She also claims that he grabbed her by the shoulders and shoved her around.

Despite these scandalous claims, don’t expect to hear a response from Johnny Depp’s lips anytime soon. Here’s what his spokesperson had to say when news of Depp’s divorce from Amber Heard went public.

“Given the brevity of this marriage and the most recent and tragic loss of his mother, Johnny will not respond to any of the salacious false stories, gossip, misinformation and lies about his personal life. Hopefully the dissolution of this short marriage will be resolved quickly.”
