Johnny Depp: Wife Amber Heard Has Filed For Divorce

Amber Heard has filed for a divorce from Johnny Depp according to a report from TMZ. Depp’s mother, Betty Sue Palmer, died at the age of 81 on May 20 after a long battle with an undisclosed illness. The divorce papers state that he and Heard separated two days later, on May 22, with irreconcilable differences cited as the reason for the pair’s split. They married in February 2015 without a pre-nuptial agreement. Thirty-year-old Amber is reportedly seeking spousal support.

Depp met his soon-to-be ex-wife in 2009 when they were both working on the film The Rum Diary. The Washington Post reports that Heard came out as a lesbian in 2010 at a Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) event. She also, however, has stated that she doesn’t consider herself either heterosexual or homosexual.

“I don’t label myself one way or another — I have had successful relationships with men and now a woman. I love who I love; it’s the person that matters.”

When Johnny met Amber, he was in a relationship with French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis. Amber had split with her girlfriend of three years, Tasya van Ree, in 2011. Johnny and Vanessa were together for 14 years before they split in 2012 and had two children together, 16-year-old Lily Rose and 14-year-old John, but they never married. Depp and Heard began dating following the breakup of that relationship.

Johnny has talked about deciding to marry Heard after, as reported by The Mirror, she “got into his head.”

“She was in my head, so I tracked her down. We tracked each other down. Actually, incidentally, it was amazing. It was at the first day of press on ‘The Rum Diary.’ Then we married that very day!”

Depp’s second wedding was a small affair in Los Angeles. They later had a ceremony on a private island in the Bahamas, but they held the first one in the states so Johnny’s mother, who was already sick at the time, would be able to attend.

Rumors of Depp’s marital problems have been circulating for months, and the pair have not been seen together in public recently. Neither Depp nor Heard had confirmed any marital problems. As recently as January, 52-year-old Johnny thanked his wife in his acceptance speech at the Palm Springs International Film Festival as he received the Desert Palm Achievement Award.

“I also have to thank my wife, Amber, for putting up with me, for living with all these characters, which can’t be easy. It’s hard for me — it’s got to be hard for her.”

Johnny’s new movie, Alice Through the Looking Glass, opens in theaters nationwide on Friday. He has been busy lately with promoting the movie and touring with his band, Hollywood Vampires. This is in the midst of a personally difficult time that includes the breakup of his marriage and the death of his mother. Depp and his mother had a very close relationship, and he often spoke of her with admiration.

Johnny Depp was born in Owensboro, Kentucky to waitress Betty Sue Depp and civil engineer John Christopher Depp, but he spent his childhood in Florida. Johnny dropped out of high school at the age of 15 and fronted several bands. While on a visit to Los Angeles, Depp met Nicolas Cage, who encouraged him to look into acting. On Cage’s suggestion, he explored acting and soon ended up with his first role in the low-budget horror movie Nightmare on Elm Street. It was his role as undercover cop Tommy Hanson on the TV show 21 Jump Street that shot him to fame. Johnny currently has 79 acting credits.
