One Direction Wins Another Music Award But Will Be Replaced In 2017

The Billboard Music Awards took place in Los Angeles on May 22, and while One Direction won one of the same awards they received in 2015… no one in the band showed up at the ceremony.

Is this another sign that One Direction is officially over or are they simply taking their vacation seriously? In the meantime, it appears that One Direction’s spotlight is slowly being taken over.

Billboard writes that there was a long list of celebrities at the awards ceremony in Las Vegas, but no one mentions One Direction.

In 2015, One Direction was at the ceremony and was the proud recipient of four Billboard Music Awards trophies for Top Artist, Touring Artist, Duo/Group, and Top Billboard 200 Artist.

In 2016, One Direction was nominated for two of the same awards again, but this time, they only won Top Duo/Group and lost their Top Touring Artist title. For this award, One Direction was thankful, according to Twitter, and some of their individual social media accounts reflected this gratitude.

Despite the fact that they are officially the “top band,” One Direction seems as if they are too busy to care. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, there are a lot of reasons that One Direction might be ready to move on with solo careers, but the rumors keep spelling out that 1D is headed toward a permanent hiatus.

For example, NME states that One Direction’s Harry Styles is completely over his 1D days, wants to cut ties with his Sony Records label deal with Simon Cowell, and is possibly moving on with a solo music career with Universal/Capitol Records.

Adding to the confusion, Bustle writes on May 23 that One Direction’s future status is still undefined, according to insiders, and it is alleged that fans will hear directly from individual members of One Direction about what their band status is in the near future.

In the end, could it be possible that One Direction does not need to quit because their spotlight has already been taken… after only a few months of vacation? One immediate possibility has always been that other members of Syco Records would step up if One Direction ever stepped down… and Little Mix is proving this theory.

For example, Little Mix recently took the spotlight away from One Direction for Biggest-Selling Tour in the U.K. in 2016, according to Digital Spy. In March 2015, Forbes reported that One Direction had the highest-grossing tour worldwide with $290 million in sales.

Regardless, in addition to One Direction imitators like One and Only Direction, Only One Direction, and Imitadores MX, there are also other pop bands from around the world that are attempting to be One Direction doppelgangers in some way.

For instance, in South Asia, the band SANAM is referred to as the “One Direction of India” and they are heading to play a one-night-only concert in South Africa, according to Channel 24.

There are also signs that One Direction is a closing chapter because at least one of their opening acts, McFly, has opened a tour of their own. According to The Sun, after being a successful part of One Direction tours in the recent past, since 1D is on vacation, McFly decided it was time to step up into the limelight.

For some bands looking to be the next One Direction, they are hungry and ready for the title. For instance, 4th Impact has been champing at the bit to be in One Direction’s world for the past year, and the indicators keep getting more direct. Movie News Guide goes as far as saying that 4th Impact had “dreamed” of becoming the female version of One Direction.

Nevertheless, there is a strong argument by voting fans that shows young music fans think Fifth Harmony is the likely candidate to replace One Direction.

As Billboard pointed out in their poll on the night before the awards ceremony, there are several musicians the public was excited to see perform at the show in Las Vegas, and One Direction’s name was not mentioned.

Although One Direction was not on the attendance list for fans to vote on, the other names that were popular in the Billboard poll were Troye Sivan, Britney Spears, Madonna, and Fifth Harmony.

Another awards ceremony that shows One Direction could be in the process of being replaced as No. 1 is the Radio Disney Music Awards. The 2016 trophy One Direction won was for Best Crush Song.

Sadly, One Direction lost three nominations at the 2016 Radio Disney Music awards including Most Talked About Artist to Taylor Swift, Fiercest Fans lost to Fifth Harmony fans, and Best Group to Fifth Harmony.

By comparison, in 2015, One Direction did not win any Radio Disney Music trophies and lost to Fifth Harmony again for Best Group and Fiercest Fans in addition to losing the 2015 award for Best Crush Song.
