Ewan McGregor To Play Two Roles In ‘Fargo’ Season 3 [Video]

There are two roles in Fargo Season 3 that have been set aside for British actor Ewan McGregor, who is perhaps best known for his role within the Star Wars prequels as Obi-Wan Kenobi. But, the parts on Fargo are not just any roles, but rather the starring roles in Season 3 of the hit anthology series on cable network FX.

Just like many actors who have played two roles in the past on both TV and film, McGregor has been cast to lead the 3rd season of Fargo to another grand spectacle of both ratings and critical success, according to Entertainment Weekly.

There have been many occasions in several different films and TV shows where an actor has had to take up two different roles on the series. Just consider what Eddie Murphy once did on The Nutty Professor, or what Lisa Kudrow did on the NBC hit TV series Friends.

But there are also many different reasons for this, which includes giving the actor an animated style of a makeover for comedic purposes, or to simply portray characters that are twins. Just consider Sarah Paulson’s role on Season 4 of American Horror Story and you will quickly learn that it can be a truly dark show.

But what Ewan McGregor will be doing on Season 3 of Fargo is none of the above. McGregor, who has had several critically acclaimed roles under his belt to date, will be portraying the star character in the show, as well as that character’s brother. The lead character’s brother will not be a twin brother, just a brother. It appears as though he will be undergoing extensive makeup changes throughout the filming process for Season 3 of Fargo.

Ewan McGregor will be portraying, mainly, a character by the name of Emmit Stussy, who appears to mirror the role played by Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) during Season 1 of Fargo.

Stussy is a family man in Minnesota who appears to be a self-made entrepreneur with considerable wealth. But his younger brother, Ray Stussy, also portrayed by Ewan McGregor, casts a looming shadow over him. At times, the drama seems to play out from their own sibling rivalry.

What is immediately clear from the Fargo Season 3 description of the two characters’ roles that McGregor will be playing is that Ray has let himself go since his obvious peak in high school. Now, he has a pot-belly and seems to live his life as a loser that cannot quite get ahead. On one hand, he is a parole officer with major chip on his shoulder. On the other hand, he blames his brother Emmit for all of the problems in his life, which includes his string of misfortunes.

Here is the official description for Season 3 of Fargo, as well as the two roles that Ewan McGregor will be portraying.

“Emmit Stussy is the Parking Lot King of Minnesota. A handsome, self-made, real estate mogul and family man, Emmit sees himself as an American success story. His slightly younger brother, Ray Stussy, on the other hand is more of a cautionary tale,” the description on EW reads. “Balding, pot-bellied, Ray is the kind of guy who peaked in high school. Now a parole officer, Ray has a huge chip on his shoulder about the hand he’s been dealt, and he blames his brother, Emmit, for his misfortunes.”

Fans of Ewan McGregor and Fargo might be delighted to know that he is also making a follow-up film including a major role he played in the ’90s, which was that of a drug-addicted punk on the streets of London in the film Trainspotting. Trainspotting 2 is currently in production.

There has been no word yet when Season 3 of Fargo will debut on FX.
