Ariana Grande Defends Selena Gomez After She’s Referred To As ‘Justin Bieber’s Ex’

Ariana Grande is rushing to the defense of Selena Gomez and calling out those who refer to her as “Justin Bieber’s ex.”

Grande spoke out about her disdain for women being referred to as a man’s current or former property in a new interview with Billboard, where she appeared to slam those who constantly refer to Selena in the context of Justin Bieber, despite he and Selena splitting in 2014 after a 4-year on/off romance.

“I saw a headline—draw your own conclusions [on the subjects] because it’ll be so much drama that I don’t want—they called someone another someone’s ex, and that p***** me off,” Grande told Billboard. “This person has had so many great records in the last year, and she hasn’t been dating him forever,” Ariana said, appearing to refer to Selena. “Call her by her name!”

Though Ariana encouraged readers to use their imagination when it came to exactly who she was referring to in the interview, the interviewer noted in the piece that “it seems obvious” that Ariana was actually referring Selena Gomez and her past relationship with Justin Bieber.

“I’ll never be able to swallow the fact that people feel the need to attach a successful woman to a man when they say her name,” Ariana continued, again seemingly referring to Selena. “I hate that. Like, I’m fuming. Sorry. You opened up… I need to take a sip of water and breathe. Don’t get me started on this s***.”

Ariana Grande’s public defense of Selena Gomez comes after Grande took to social media back in 2015 to voice her anger over women being referred to as a man’s ex, posting a lengthy message on Twitter where Ariana admitted that she was tired of being referred to as the ex of her former boyfriend, Big Sean.

“What I meant when I said what I said about not being Sean’s ex is that I am tired of living in a world where women are mostly referred to as a man’s past, present, or future PROPERTY/POSSESSION,” Ariana wrote on the message on her official Twitter page. “I do not. belong. to anyone. but myself. and neither do you.”

“I have clearly not been having the boy questions in my interviews lately because I have come to the realization that I have SO. MUCH. MORE. to talk about,” Grande continued. “I’m currently making the best music I’ve ever made in my life, having the best time of my life on tour with some of the greatest people I’ve ever known, working my a** off every single day.”

Ariana Grande’s call out on behalf of Selena also comes just months after Ariana appeared to have some pretty serious friction with Justin Bieber across her various social media platforms, even appearing to refer to him as “Satan” in one particular Twitter message.

Back in January, Bieber appeared to be getting pretty flirty with Ariana on Instagram after he allegedly commented on one of Grande’s videos on the social media site. “D*** Ariana u look so good.”

Shortly after, fans began posting screen captures of Bieber’s supposed flirty comment to Ariana online. Grande then took to Twitter, where she wrote, “lol no,” before adding, “Not today satan!!!!!! gtg finish this music & live my cute, drama free life!!” which fans speculated at the time was Grande’s less-than-thrilled response to Justin’s comment.

But while the drama had fans believing Grande and Bieber could have been locked in a nasty feud, Ariana later denied those claims in an interview with The Mirror, where Ariana claimed that she and Justin were “friendly” despite the two seeming to unfollow and then refollow each other on social media.

Telling the site that there’s “no deal, man” when it comes to supposed bad blood between the two, Ariana claimed that she and Justin were “friendly” and “acquaintances,” months before calling out those who still tie him to Gomez.

“We’ve always been acquaintances and friendly and that’s always been the case. Of course I would say hi to him if I was at a party with him,” Ariana added.
