The FA Cup provides a silver lining in what has otherwise been a disappointing season by Manchester United’s standards. Louis van Gaal’s men could not win the last two games of the Premier League campaign to finish in the top four, but winning the FA Cup — a historically coveted trophy — could just be the catalyst that United’s fans will hope brings better fortune to the club for the next season.

For Louis van Gaal, particularly, a loss in the final would almost definitely mean that it becomes the last game of his career as a manager, while a win could go some way in convincing the higher echelons of Manchester United board staff, as well as a major section of the fans, that the Dutchman remains the man to steer the club in the right direction — at least for another season.

Moreover, a club of Manchester United’s pedigree would want to end the brief trophy-drought that has plagued them since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, and a win against Crystal Palace in the final would bring them level with Arsenal, who have won the FA Cup a record 12 times.

Speaking to MUTV before the game, van Gaal admitted that winning the cup remains his focus and that he wouldn’t mind if his team wins the game against Crystal Palace in an “ugly” manner.

“That is my aim of course. I want to lift the cup here in England and then I have done it in four different countries, but the most important thing is the club, the players and the fans and I hope we can bring the cup home.”

“Of course the starting point is to perform well, to win beautiful…to score beautiful goals. But a 1-0 win, for me, is also enough because winning is the most important thing in a final. When you lose you have nothing.”

Bastian Schweinsteiger and Luke Shaw remain Manchester United’s long-term absentees, while Morgan Schneiderlin could be back in contention after missing out the last game against Bournemouth. Defenders Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian could also feature in the final, according to manager Louis van Gaal.

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace will be looking to win the first major trophy in their 111-year-old history when they take on Manchester United in the final of the FA Cup on Saturday. Although the London team have reached the final on two previous occasions, they were denied both those times, the latter of the losses coming against Manchester United in the 1990 FA Cup final, when the Red Devils saw off Palace 1-0 in a replay after drawing the first game 3-3.

Back then, Palace manager Alan Pardew was a player for Crystal Palace, and he relived some of the memories speaking before the game, reports IB Times.

“For me, as a player in 1990, I thought: ‘Oh, we might win.’ I didn’t think we could win if I am honest. I thought we might.”

“But, if it all goes our way this time, I actually think we can win. And I think this group of players think they can win, too. Some players don’t get that shot at an FA Cup final. One or two of these players will never play in a final again, so this is their opportunity to get a winner’s medal.”

“We’ve had good meetings about what it means for us all. We’re well set.”

Pardew will hope that ex-United player Wilfried Zaha can cause his old team some problems, with the winger having been in good form for the Eagles during the end of the campaign. Yannick Bolasie will be another player that Manchester United will hope to contain during the game.

Joe Ledley remains the only absentee for Palace with a fractured fibula, according to Bleacher Report.
