Olivia Wilde is one activist who has been on the forefront in the push for western countries to accept refugees. As a person who spends a significant amount of time with refugees and witnessed their suffering first hand, she has used her voice to campaign against xenophobia. That said, Olivia Wilde has recently targeted Donald Trump in her endeavor as he has in the past made some controversial comments against refugees.
Just last year, Olivia Wilde said that it was sad that someone running to become the president of the United States would be so xenophobic and ignorant of the struggles faced by refugees. She said this while speaking about the impact Ellis, a film in which Robert De Niro starred, had in highlighting their struggles. This was while on an interview with Page Six. The following was her exact statement.
“It made me think of the current refugee crisis. [America] was a beacon of hope for so many … yet some in this country have developed this xenophobia that totally conflicts with what we’re based on… The fact that we can have someone running for president who openly projects that xenophobia is really sickening, particularly when you look at a film like this and remember our roots,”
This was after Donald Trump stated that he would deport all Syrian refugees from America if he became president, as they were potentially ISIS sympathizers. He also added that they could be Islamic State militants in disguise. He also said the following as reported by the Huffington Post.
“I’m putting the people on notice that are coming here from Syria as part of this mass migration. If I win, they’re going back.”
Fast forward to current events and, a few days ago, Olivia Wilde slammed Donald Trump for his lack of compassion towards refugees. She did this through a touching Instagram post featuring a young Syrian girl, captioning it as follows.
“Next time you hear someone, maybe even a loser named Donald Trump, say all Syrian refugees should be rejected and suspected, think of this face. These kids deserve our compassion and activism. Donald Trump wouldn’t survive 5 minutes in her reality.”
She also posted another picture of her with women at Za’atari refugee camp. The following was her caption.
“The lovely Syrian girls in the @savethechildren healing-through-arts program at the Za’atari refugee camp were kind enough to attempt to teach me how to sew. I left them with a new perspective on failure, as well as the human capacity to sweat. #Zaatari”
Presently, Olivia Wilde is a member of the Save the Children non-governmental organization. On Monday, Angelina Jolie also spoke out against Donald Trump’s views on Muslim refugees. This was after she was asked about her thoughts on Donald Trump’s comments against Muslims. This was what she said as reported by CNN.
“To me, America is built on people from around the world coming together for freedoms, especially freedom of religion. So it’s hard to hear this is coming from someone who is pressing to be an American president,”
“We don’t know who these people are. We don’t know where they’re from. We don’t know where they’re from. They have no documentation. We all have hearts and we can build safe zones in Syria and we’ll get the Gulf states to put up the money.”
