NFL Rumors: Dallas Cowboys Signing Zach Mettenberger After Tennessee Titans Release

NFL rumors are swirling around Zach Mettenberger. Earlier in the day, ESPN reported that the quarterback was released by the Tennessee Titans. Since so many teams in the National Football League are still trying to upgrade their depth at the position, Mettenberger is expected to receive a good amount of interest.

As a sixth-round draft pick, the Tennessee Titans weren’t expecting Zach Mettenberger to be their quarterback of the future. It’s hard to find one of those that late in the NFL Draft. Tom Brady is more of the exception to the rule, and a lot of his success was because of Bill Belichick. The Titans didn’t expect a lot from Mettenberger, and they received just that. In his 10 starts for Tennessee, Mettenberger lost every single one of them.

Zach Mettenberger might have seen the writing on the wall before the Tennessee Titans informed him of his release. When the offseason began, the team signed Matt Cassel. Though the veteran quarterback didn’t fare so well with the Dallas Cowboys when Tony Romo went down with an injury, he can be a good mentor for Marcus Mariota.

Since there is a dearth of quality quarterback in the NFL, the belief is that Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson attempted to gauge trade interest for Zach Mettenberger. When Robinson couldn’t find a deal, he decided to let Mettenberger walk. Though trade interest was low, it doesn’t mean that Mettenberger will not have options in free agency. General managers are willing to take the risk whenever they’re not giving away assets in a trade.

Fan Sided believes that one of those options could be the Dallas Cowboys.

Every NFL fan on the planet witnessed what happened to the Dallas Cowboys when Tony Romo went down with two collarbone injuries. Rather than competing for a spot in the Super Bowl, the Cowboys found themselves on the outside looking in whenever the NFL Playoffs started.

The Dallas Cowboys went through several backup quarterbacks. Matt Cassel, Brandon Weeden, and Kellen Moore could not move the offense enough to help save the season. Moore has been kept around, and the Cowboys drafted Dak Prescott in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. However, neither guy is really proven. Zach Mettenberger has more experience than Moore and Prescott.

Jerry Jones could be standing in the way of Zach Mettenberger, though. The Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager is publicly telling NFL fans that he’s completely comfortable with his current quarterback situation. Jones feels that Kellen Moore can more than capably take over in case Tony Romo is injured again. Just like last season, he is hoping that a good running game behind a great offensive line can make up for the lost productivity at the quarterback position.

Someone in the Dallas Cowboys organization might need to step in and convince Jerry Jones to give Zach Mettenberger a chance. The plan didn’t work so well last year. Cowboys fans might not tolerate having to sit through another season like the last one. Dallas didn’t really improve their defense all that much through the draft and free agency, so they cannot rely on them to help alleviate the pressure on the offense.

Zach Mettenberger is going to get another chance in the NFL. His tremendous arm strength is just too appealing to coaches. Someone out there is going to want to groom him into a quarterback that can play in the National Football League. They just need to figure out how to get around the fact that his lack of mobility makes him a sitting duck in the backfield.
