MLB: St. Louis Cardinals Win Final Game Against LA Dodgers, Prepare For Colorado Rockies At Home

After losing two straight to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the St. Louis Cardinals finished their LA road trip with a victory over the Dodgers, who are now in second place behind San Francisco in the NL West. Thanks to some solid pitching from starter Mike Leake and clutch pinch hitting from Yadier Molina, St. Louis avoided a complete sweep at the hands of the Dodgers as they continue to chase the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central, who just happen to still be the best team in Major League Baseball.

The Cardinals will hope to build on that momentum when they welcome the Colorado Rockies to Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Tuesday. It will be the beginning of a three-game Cards-Rockies series, featuring two MLB teams that are just barely above.500 and currently sit at third place in their respective National League divisions.

After the Cardinals finish this series with the Rockies, they’ll stay at home for two more series against the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Chicago Cubs.

Cardinals hitting

Yadier Molina had the offensive play of the game when he scored 2 RBIs on a double after being inserted into the game as a pinch-hitter. Matt Carpenter, Stephen Piscotty, and Aledmys Diaz were responsible for the other three St. Louis RBIs. No one on the Cardinals’ squad was able to get more than one hit on Sunday night. Aledmys Diaz (.376) went 1-for-3 on the night.

As a team, the St. Louis Cardinals are top 5 in the MLB in terms of batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and OPS. They currently lead the National League in RBIs and home runs and remain in the MLB’s Top 5 for triples, doubles, hits, and runs.

Cardinals pitching

Mike Leake (4.66) earned his second win of the season Sunday night, improving his 2016 record to 2-3 after pitching six innings. Jonathan Broxton pitched a 1-2-3 7th inning, while Kevin Siegrist gave up just one hit in the 8th — a home run to Corey Seager. With a 5-2 lead, David Rosenthal got through the 9th inning without giving up a hit, recording a strike out and a walk before earning his seventh save of the season.

Jaime Garcia (3-2, 2.58 ERA) is set to pitch the first game against the Rockies, as Colorado will start Chad Bettis (3-2, 4.56 ERA). Adam Wainwright (3-3, 6.80 ERA) is scheduled to start on Wednesday night, while Michael Wacha (2-4, 3.23 ERA) should be on the mound for the Cards on Thursday.

Upcoming St. Louis Cardinals Schedule

The Cards’ series with the Colorado Rockies is the first of three consecutive series for St. Louis at Busch Stadium. The three-game series ends on Thursday.

Beginning May 20, the Cardinals move on from the Colorado Rockies to the Arizona Diamondbacks (17-23, last in the NL West). The Cardinals and D-Backs split their last series 2-2 at the end of April. After Arizona, St. Louis has a chance to make up some serious ground in the NL Central as the Chicago Cubs (27-9, first in the NL Central) play three games from May 23-25.

That homestretch is followed by a four-game series in Washington, D.C., against the Nationals (23-15, first in the NL East) and a three-game series in Milwaukee against the Brewers (16-22, fourth in the NL Central).

Where To Watch

The St. Louis Cardinals vs. Colorado Rockies (Game 1 of the 3-game series) is set for Tuesday, May 17. As of Monday afternoon, plenty of tickets were still available (directly through the Cardinals’ website) for all three Rockies-Cardinals games for fans who want to watch the Cards vs. Rockies live in St. Louis.

Tuesday’s match-up will be an evening game, which is scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m. CST. The Cardinals-Dodgers game will air regionally on FOX Sports Midwest.
