‘The Good Wife’ Spinoff With Christine Baranski Reportedly In Final Negotiations

Fans of The Good Wife may be in for some good news.

While fans continue to mourn the end of the series and try to figure out exactly what happened in the May 8 finale, Variety broke the news on Thursday that CBS is in negotiations with Christine Baranski, who played Diane Lockhart, along with Cush Jumbo, who played Lucca Quinn, for a spinoff series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Good Wife co-creators Robert and Michelle King are rumored to be writing the first episode of the spinoff but will likely not produce the whole series.

According to THR, the Good Wife spinoff is not expected to air on CBS but will stream on CBS All Access on-demand subscription service, which costs $5.99 per month.

CBS will likely announce the new Good Wife spinoff on May 18 when they present their fall schedule if all goes according to plan.

One would hope that a Good Wife spinoff will give fans a little insight as to what happens to Alicia Florrick, played by Julianna Margulies, after the final slap was delivered to Alicia by Diane in the series finale last week, effectively ending their plans for an all-female firm, Lockhart, Florrick & Associates.

Fans were also left hanging over what happened with Diane’s marriage to Kurt McVeigh, played by Veep series regular Gary Cole, after his alleged infidelity that came to light in the finale. When The Good Wife concluded, Diane and Lucca, who joined the series in Season 7, were working for the same firm.

The finale ended the way it began — with a press conference.

In the final moments, Peter Florrick (played by Chris Noth) and Alicia hold hands and enter a press conference where Peter is set to resign his governorship because of circulating rumors that he helped one of his donors’ relative get away with murder.

Unlike the premiere, Alicia did not remain by his side after meeting the press. Instead, she went off in search of her new love Jason (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan). It was about this time that Alicia ran into Diane and that now famous slap.

Perhaps the creators planned have fans left wondering after the finale from the get-go. A Good Wife spinoff might explain why so many unanswered questions remained when the credits rolled at the end of the finale.

Baranski hinted to THR last month that she was open to the possibility of a spinoff, especially if the Kings were involved.

“I always thought they understood me as an actress and they wrote beautifully for actors and they wrote women very well. So, of course I would hope to cross paths with them again.”

If the deal is a go, the Good Wife spinoff would become the SVOD service’s second high-profile order after the November 2015 news of an original Star Trek series, which will premiere on CBS in January 2017 before moving to its permanent home on All Access.

By all accounts, CBS has big plans for its All Access streaming. CBS Corp. chief executive Leslie Moonves said as much during an earnings call late last year.

“All Access is very important. [It] will put out original content and knowing the loyalty of Star Trek fans, this will boost it. … There’s about a billion channels out there and because of Star Trek, people will know what All Access is about.”

As previously reported by The Inquisitr, the Good Wife finale had its largest audience record since 2014, despite it being Mother’s Day, averaging a 1.2 rating/4 share in adults in the age group between 18 and 49 and 10.5 million viewers overall in the 9 p.m. time slot.
