Channing Tatum Gambit Movie Could Start Shooting By End Of 2017

Channing Tatum has long been waiting to play the character of Remy Lebeau, otherwise known as Gambit, and now it looks like there’s been some movement on when production of the film might start.

Channing Tatum and his Gambit movie were pulled out of the Marvel Comic Universe movie lineup a few months back in order to polish the script. There was some talk that once the movie was yanked it, the Gambit film wouldn’t be put back in the rotation at all, but it appears Channing Tatum is carrying enough clout these days that production is going to move forward.

While doing a press junket for X-Men: Apocalypse, Simon Kinberg shed some more light on the upcoming Channing Tatum flick. The producer of all the X-Men movies in this new rebooted universe reiterated the movie had been pulled from the official schedule to make sure the writing was at a level it needed to be. According to JoBlo, Kinberg said the repairs and rewrites to the script are coming along quite nicely.

“We’ve got to get the script right. We just didn’t get the script to the place where we all thought the movie deserved. So we’re still working on the script. We’re very close, actually, to being done with the script. And the hope is that Channing Tatum has a couple of movies he has to shoot, but that we would shoot at the end of this year, or the beginning of next year.”

When it comes to getting everything just so, including how Channing Tatum will be asked to play Gambit, Kinberg says he learned quite a bit from Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool film. The producer says he realized that while the movie has to be memorable when people are asked what their favorite comic book movie is, they aren’t going to remember the plot so much as they are going to remember the character.

The producer pointed out the story for this Gambit film is going to be unique to the X-Men universe, and Channing Tatum will be playing a character that hasn’t really been seen before. Even Deadpool didn’t have the same personality of the Remy LeBeau Channing Tatum is going to be taking on. Kinberg said this movie is going to be a heist film, which is something they’ve never really done before. Because of that, the group behind the flick wanted to make sure they got it just right.

Channing Tatum will be playing what is basically a con man who uses his special powers to help rip people off. Even Deadpool, who was a mercenary who talked about killing or maiming people for money, had a kind of moral code that Gambit won’t be adopting. Anti-heroes are becoming the next big thing in comic book movies, and it sure seems as though this will be one of this flicks that has a character people aren’t going to like at first. Of course, Channing Tatum will likely take the character to a place where they will find a bit of redemption.

Cosmic Books News reports having Tatum on board made the producers anxious, and they almost started shooting earlier this year. In the end, they thought better of that move, wanting to make sure the script was one Channing Tatum and the like would be proud to shoot. In the end, the production team decided they could have a franchise inside the X-Men universe the way Deadpool is making a name for itself. With Channing Tatum and the rest willing to wait, they wanted to get it right, and now the film could begin rolling right along next year.
