‘The Mysteries Of Laura’ Cancelled: Debra Messing Shares Statement, Happy ‘Ending’

The Mysteriesof Laura will reportedly not return for a third season.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC added the procedural comedy-drama series to its growing list of show cancellations after two seasons.

Actress Debra Messing played the titular role in The Mysteries of Laura of Laura Diamond, an impressive detective that worked hard to balance her duties on the clock with her life as a single parent. In addition to the numerous criminals that she worked to take down in more than 30 episodes, Laura also struggled with her personal relationships outside of work as well.

Messing reached out to her social media followers and The Mysteries of Laura fans via social media on Saturday, confirming the show’s cancellation and responding to several tweets related to the show.

*** WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD ***

Perhaps one of the most interesting tweets for fans of The Mysteries of Laura was in regards to the show’s Season 2 cliffhanger.

The Season 2 finale – and what has now essentially become the series finale – was an emotionally turbulent roller coaster ride. The death of Captain Nancy Santiani (played by Callie Thorne) was the core story of the episode.

In addition to an investigation which eventually led to finding the people responsible for the murder, the entire team had to come to grips with the grim reality of the situation and its overall impact on their respective lives and stories.

Jake Broderick (Josh Lucas) decided to take things to the next level with his new girlfriend, Jennifer Lambert (Jenna Fischer) by making plans to pop the question. Lucy Diamond (played by Debby Ryan) provided valuable relationship advice to her half-sister Laura right when she needed it the most. However, in the final moments of the Mysteries of Laura finale, viewers realized that Laura’s monumental monologue and passionate kiss may have been too little too late.

With the news of The Mysteries of Laura being cancelled after two seasons, fans were faced with the reality that the epic cliffhanger essentially would leave them hanging indefinitely. However, Debra Messing shared a “happy ending” of sorts on Twitter in response to one particular fan’s tweet in reference to what may have happened next.

“Let’s say Jake called off the engagement and ran to Laura and they lived happily ever after. Ok?”

Seeing Jake and Laura back together in an official relationship may have been pleasant to see on the small screen for The Mysteries of Laura fans and followers. However, unless a different network revives the series, chances are that fantasy will continue to live in the creative world of fanfiction and television show pipe dreams.

In addition to Debra Messing and Josh Lucas, The Mysteries of Laura featured an impressive ensemble cast including such actors and actresses as Laz Alonso, Janina Gavankar, Meg Steedle and Max Jenkins.
