‘The Vampire Diaries’ Opens Up About [Spoiler]’s Return

An old character made a reappearance during The Vampire Diaries Season 7 finale. Well, the voice of an old character did and it opens up big possibilities for next season. Just how did the show put it all together, and will this certain character return for good?

Towards the end of the finale, Damon heard Elena’s voice. This isn’t the first time she has appeared in the season. When Damon thought he had burned her body, there were flashes of her in the coffin. This was old footage from Season 6, and she never came back to the set to see anybody. The Vampire Diaries finale was different.

Showrunner Julie Plec had told Nina Dobrev that they could use old footage, scramble it together and create the sentences they needed. There was another option available, and that was for Dobrev to come into the set and record the lines. Knowing that she would get to see her show friends, she chose the latter and it meant that the scenes were authentic.

Of course, Elena’s body wasn’t actually in The Armoury, and Damon knew that. He just couldn’t help himself and wanted desperately to believe that his girlfriend—the love of his eternal life—was back. It was all to set up the cliffhanger of Damon and then Enzo switching to the very dark side.

What does it mean for The Vampire Diaries Season 8? Will Elena return for good?

Plec explained that she and Dobrev have always had an agreement and that is something she will stick to right now. Elena will return for the series finale, but there is no idea how many episodes that will be for. The Inquisitr previously reported that it would likely be one or two episodes right at the very end.

This is subject to change, and it really depends on Plec, Dobrev and the show as a whole. According to TV Line, Elena could return sooner if the show continues longer than has been expected. It looks like Plec believes the show may end with Season 8 or Season 9 at a pinch. The Vampire Diaries fans believe Season 8 will be the last if Kat Graham, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley are leaving.

Elena’s return will depend on Dobrev. She said after Season 6 that she wanted to go on and do other things. It was the agreement that she would come back for the final episode, but there were no plans to revive her character—or any other character on The Vampire Diaries that she’s had—for a full season. However, things change and if she and Plec agree that she wants to come back and there is a storyline, then it is a possibility.

Right now, there are no hints in The Vampire Diaries that Elena will return. Damon just heard her voice; the monster in the vault mimicking her. Her body is elsewhere, and the link to Bonnie still stands. The Season 7 finale jumped ahead three months, but just involved her friends writing in their journals telling her that they would help save Damon for her; anything he did wasn’t his fault.

Another season of The Vampire Diaries has come to an end. Bonnie has been saved from the curse of The Huntress, and Season 8 will be about the vault monster, as many people predicted.

The Vampire Diaries Season 7 has been a mixture of highs and lows. It was the first year without Dobrev, and that certainly didn’t make it easy. The show had to change focus from two brothers fighting over the same girl to the two brothers fighting to be brothers again. With the vault monster out, it is now one brother fighting to save the other on The Vampire Diaries.
