NJ Mother Decapitates Toddler Son, Kills Self
Camden, NJ – A 33-year-old mother is believed to have decapitated her 2-year-old son before stabbing herself fatally as police formed a perimeter around the home.
The child’s mother, Chevonne Thomas, reportedly summoned police herself early Wednesday and is said to have sounded confused on the phone when calling 911. Police arrived to investigate the information that toddler Zahree Thomas may have been in danger after her call.
When police arrived at Thomas’ home in Camden, they viewed the headless body of little Zahree through a window and retreated from the home amid fears Chevonne Thomas was armed or may attack.
After police formed a perimeter around the home, Thomas stabbed herself in the throat and died of her wounds. As the only witness to the decapitation-suicide that occurred in Camden herself is now dead, police are left to piece together evidence from the scene and the Thomas’ family’s history to determine what may have happened in the days and hours leading up to the brutal and shocking incident.
Upon entering the home, SWAT team members discovered Chevonne Thomas’ body, the lifeless body of Zahree, and his decapitated head in the freezer of the home.
Police say the killing occurred after Thomas had a fight with her boyfriend, and a man identified to be the father of Zahree Thomas has been notified of the child’s death. In addition to the deceased toddler, Thomas is also said to have another child who is 18 and lives elsewhere.
It was not immediately known how Zahree Thomas died. Police say that before the decapitation-suicide, Thomas had previously been accused of child endangerment.
