Jimmy Kimmel Announces He’s Running For Vice President On ‘Kimmel’

Jimmy Kimmel just announced his intention to run for Vice President of the United States on the Thursday night episode of his late-night comedy talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Deadline reports.

The comedian launched his VP campaign with a speech at the podium of Hollywood Boulevard with supporters such as Rob Gronkowski and Guillermo standing at his back. Kimmel arrived at the podium via his campaign bus, which had the words “Jimmy Kimmel for Vice President: A good, solid #2” written on the side.

“Today, I stand before you, not as a TV host, or a father, or an amazing lover– the best lover, for sure– but as an American citizen… The future of democracy is slipping through our fat, buttery hands. Millions of people are scared… but no one ever has to be scared again, because tonight, I am humbled to announce, that I’m officially running for Vice President of the United States.”

Shortly after his announcement, Jimmy talked at length about his future plans for the United States once he assumes the Vice Presidency.

“It’s time to take our country back. From whom? I don’t know, but I want it back!” Kimmel told his supporters.

Of course, those who are familiar with Kimmel’s humor should already know that the comedian is only poking fun at the current state of the country’s politics. He’s not the first one to do it as well. In 1968, Pat Paulsen drew laughs when he announced that he was running for the Presidency.

“Why not? I can’t dance—besides, the job has a good pension plan and I’ll get a lot of money when I retire,” Paulsen said.

In 2008, Stephen Colbert also launched a short-lived campaign before that year’s election season.

During his speech, Jimmy drew more laughs when he referenced HBO’s most popular television series, Game of Thrones.

“As Vice President of the United States, I will never stop fighting for you. Unless Game of Thrones is on. In which case, I will stop fighting for an hour, or slightly more, depending how many times I have to rewind to figure out what’s going on,” Jimmy said.

Kimmel urged his supporters to “spread the word” and to “be part of the revolution.”

Kimmel also revealed that he isn’t running for Vice President because he’s an egomaniac, noting that he’s just as humble as Mother Teresa. As to his plans in fighting terrorism, Jimmy said that he plans on figuring out how to defeat ISIS over a meal with Gronkowski.

The comedy gag was far from over, as CNN anchors Jake Tapper, Dana Bash, and Wolf Blitzer interrupted the show to ask Jimmy a few pressing questions in regards to his VP campaign.

“Do you think you’ll make a mockery of this election?” Tapper asked. “I think it’s too late for anyone to do that” replied Kimmel.

“Now, for those of you who think this is a joke — for those who say, ‘Oh, this is another prank by Jimmy Kimmel’ — I can assure you, that bus I pulled up in was very expensive,” he said. “This is no joke. This is very real. We have a website and everything.”

We expect Jimmy Kimmel to talk further about his VP campaign on Monday when he appears as a guest co-host on Kelly Ripa’s first episode for Live!. Jimmy is also scheduled to talk about his campaign on ABC News’s daytime talk show The View.

Those who can’t wait to hear more details about Kimmel’s platform can tune in at ABC’s Upfront Presentation in Lincoln Center, where the late-night talk show host is scheduled to make an appearance.
