‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Spin-Off Gets A Title, Script Order And Kurt Sutter Gets A Co-Creator

Kurt Sutter is getting ready for a big return to the world of outlaw bikers. Sutter’s upcoming Sons of Anarchy spin-off is starting to take shape, with the creator announcing both an official title and a new co-creator for the project. A script has already been ordered, and it will only be a matter of time before pre-production for the highly anticipated spin-off gets underway.

According to Deadline, the title for the Sons of Anarchy spin-off is Mayans MC. While Sutter has already explored the inner workings of the outlaw biker culture, his new series will take a similar approach but with a big twist.

“[Mayans MC is] a dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time, reflected through a Latino lens,” the network shared in a statement.

With the focus shifting to Latino biker gangs, Sutter felt the need to partner with someone who could more accurately portray life in a Latino biker gang. In order to accomplish that goal, Sutter has officially signed on Elgin James to write the script and help produce.

“I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice,” Sutter stated. “Because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice.”

James has an incredible history that includes a troubled past not dissimilar from some of the characters on Sons of Anarchy. In fact, James belonged to a multi-ethnic gang in Boston for some 15 years and constantly clashed with neo-Nazis and the drug world. James turned his life around when he moved to Los Angeles and enrolled in the Sundance Institute Feature Film program.

From here, things started looking up for James. He entered the 2011 Sundance Film Festival with the movie Little Birds. The film starred Leslie Mann and Juno Temple. The movie ended up winning a National Board of Review award in 2012 after a wider release through Millennium Entertainment.

According to E! Online, the decision to green light Sutter’s spin-off was an easy decision for FX. After all, Sons of Anarchy is still the network’s highest-rated drama despite ending back in 2014. Sutter’s relationship with the network was also a factor in their decision to move forward with the project.

Sutter has worked with FX on a number of different projects in the past. According to the Wrap, before his epic run on Sons of Anarchy, Sutter worked as a writer on The Shield. That series ended after seven seasons and opened the door for Sutter’s insanely popular Sons of Anarchy.

As fans will recall, Sutter ventured out following the end of Sons of Anarchy with a new series, The Bastard Executioner. The show centered on the story of a medieval knight who was drawn to a life of violence. Unfortunately, the show was not as popular as Sons, and he ended up pulling the plug on his own after the first season concluded.

Considering the popularity of Sons of Anarchy, there is little chance that Mayans MC will be canceled after the first season. With a few Sons of Anarchy alum expected to make an appearance in the new spin-off, fans are sure to tune in to see some of their favorite characters back in action. (Fingers crossed that Charlie Hunnam’s Jax Teller makes a cameo!)

An official premiere date for Mayans MC has not been announced, but FX has already started to officially develop the script for the pilot episode. While no word has been issued on casting, fans can expect more news in the near future.
