‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Spoilers: Derek Returning? Patrick Dempsey Begging Shonda Rhimes For Role

Could Grey’s Anatomy fans be getting Dr. Derek Shepherd, also known as “McDreamy,” back? Actor Patrick Dempsey has allegedly been begging the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes for a role.

According to Hollywood Life, Patrick Dempsey, whose character, Derek, was killed off Grey’s Anatomy at the end of Season 11, may be desperate for a new TV role.

Although it would be unlikely that Patrick Dempsey to return to Grey’s Anatomy, as Derek is long dead and gone, there are ways that he could make an appearance on the show. The most obvious storyline would be that Derek appears to Meredith, Amelia, and the rest of his Grey-Sloan friends in spirit form.

However, the show has already done something very similar to that in the past when they brought Izzie’s dead fiance, Denny, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, back as a ghost that only she could see as a side effect from a brain tumor.

If Derek’s character were to be brought back in that capacity, it couldn’t last for long and then Grey’s Anatomy fans would be upset over having to say goodbye to McDreamy all over again. It probably wouldn’t be the best situation.

Meanwhile, Shonda Rhimes is working on yet another new show, and Patrick Dempsey wants in. The only problem could be that Patrick allegedly left Grey’s Anatomy on bad terms, which could deter Shonda from wanting to work with the actor again.

“Patrick knows he made a lot of people on the set unhappy back then, but he’s gone through a lot of counseling since, and is prepared to be responsible for his actions. Patrick heard that Shonda is working on a new show, and is hoping to be considered for a big role.”

Fans are still head over heels in love with Patrick Dempsey, and many would be overjoyed to see him back on TV, especially in a Shondaland show. As many avid TV watchers know, Rhimes has taken over ABC’s Thursday night line-up with her mega hit shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder, The Catch, and previously, Private Practice.

Viewers know that Patrick Dempsey is a great leading man, and he could seemingly find work on another network with ease. It’s easy to see Dempsey playing the role of a police officer or a father on another drama series, but one thing he’s never really done is play the villain. It would be very interesting to watch the actor take on a dark role, possibly one that could revamp his acting career.

If the former Grey’s Anatomy star could land a role as the bad guy in a series, or even a more risque role in a cable show on a network like HBO, Showtime, or Starz, then fans would likely love to tune in to watch him tackle a completely different character that they’re not used to seeing the handsome actor play.

A comedy role would also be an interesting turn of events for Dempsey. The former McDreamy actor recently starred alongside Renee Zellwegger in Bridgett Jones’s Baby, so it is safe to say he has some comedic chops. If he could get a part as a funny dad on a network sitcom, that would also be a new side of him that fans would likely love to watch.

No matter what Patrick Dempsey’s next role will be, he’ll always be Dr. Derek Shepherd to Grey’s Anatomy fans who have loved watching his relationship with Meredith play out on the small screen. Hopefully, viewers will get a chance to fall in love with Dempsey all over again in a new role in the future.
