‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Spin-Off Focused On Mayans Goes Into Script Development, Gets Official Title
The Sons of Anarchy spin-off series from Kurt Sutter could happen sooner than expected. According to sources, the new FX series that will focus on the Mayans is in its script development stage. According to Deadline, the new series will be called Mayans MC.
FX described Mayans MC as “a dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time, reflected through a Latino lens.”
The Mayans motorcycle club was featured throughout the seven-season run of Sons of Anarchy, with their Oakland chapter President Marcus Alvarez, played by Emilio Rivera, leading the club. The motorcycle club dealt with prostitution and heroin.

For the spin-off, creator Kurt Sutter wanted to have a Latino voice, as the members of the Mayan motorcycle club are all Hispanic. He sought help from Elgin James, the co-creator of Mayans MC, who will be penning the pilot.
“I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice. Because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice.”
As reported by Hollywood Reporter, Elgin James has the experience of being in a street gang, which could help him write the script for Mayans MC. In his teenage years, Elgin James was homeless, and he started a street gang in Boston, Friends Stand United, which consisted of members of different ethnic backgrounds. It was a vigilante street gang that went after drug dealers, racists, and neo-Nazi skinheads. Elgin was a member of the street gang for more than a decade before deciding to move to L.A. and enter into the Sundance Institute Feature Film program.

Months after premiering his first directed film, Little Birds, in 2011, Elgin James went to prison to serve his sentence for federal extortion, a charge that stemmed from his days in the street gang.
After the success of Sons of Anarchy, Kurt Sutter went on to create another series, The Bastard Executioner. The series, however, was short-lived, only having one season before being canceled. It was Sutter himself who decided to discontinue the series due to low ratings.
“I don’t want to write something that nobody’s f*****g watching.”
With The Bastard Executioner off the air, Kurt Sutter can focus on Mayans MC. As of writing, there is no news on whether the storyline of Mayans MC will be a prequel to the events of Sons of Anarchy, like Better Call Saul is to Breaking Bad, or a continuation of events from the Sons of Anarchy finale but with a focus on the Mayans. In addition, there is no word on whether Emilio Rivera will return as the president of the motorcycle club. More details are expected to be released as the development of the Mayans MC continues.
With a script finally taking shape, fans only hope that Mayans MC will push through with a pilot and be as successful as Sons of Anarchy.
Sons of Anarchy, as reported by Business Community, still stands as the most successful series from FX. The final season of the series, which was aired in 2014, was viewed by 9.26 million fans. The creators of Mayan MC hope to share the same success.
