Dolly Parton: NBC To Air ‘Coat Of Many Colors’ Holiday Sequel

Dolly Parton fans take note. NBC just announced plans to air the sequel of Coat of Many Colors, which was featured on the network in December 2015. Even better, Entertainment Weekly tells readers the original cast is slated to return.

In the event you didn’t see the original movie, which is currently available on DVD, it showcased Dolly Parton’s life as a little girl in rural Tennessee. Returning cast members include Jennifer Nettles and Ricky Schroder as Parton’s parents, Alyvia Alyn as young Dolly, and Gerald McRaney as Reverend Jake Owens. Director Stephen Herek is returning as well.

The sequel entitled Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love takes place during Christmastime. It’s then that a blizzard threatens the livelihood of everyone in town. Mountains of snow aside, Dolly’s father is determined to earn enough money to buy his wife the wedding ring he was never able to afford. Around the same time frame, Dolly’s musical talents start to gain attention.

According to the movie’s executive producer, Sam Haskell, Alyvia Alyn is the perfect little girl to portray young Dolly Parton. Not only does she resemble Dolly, as a child, she can sing and has a whole lot of spunk and emotion. These attributes were all critical to Parton when the first movie was being cast.

A Deadline Hollywood report recently indicated that almost 16 million viewers tuned in to watch the December 10, 2015, broadcast of Coat of Many Colors. Much of the appeal of the movie centered around Parton’s music, spirit, and belief in God. Dolly had this to say about the movie’s overwhelming success.

“I was so overwhelmed and touched by how many people watched Coat of Many Colors and their reaction to it. The song ‘Coat of Many Colors,’ of course, has always been my favorite and has touched so many people through the years, especially me. It is a true story from a very special time in my childhood. I am so happy to share this story with the viewers and to say there is so much more to tell because mine truly has been a life of many colors. I hope the viewers will fall in love all over again.”

NBC plans to announce the premiere date of Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love within the next few months. Additional cast members will be revealed at that time as well.

The sequel to Coat of Many Colors is being written by Pamela K. Long. Long, Parton, and Sam Haskell all share executive producer duties on the Warner Bros. television broadcast.

The way Rolling Stone tells it, Dolly Parton is currently dealing with a full plate. Not only is she working on this holiday sequel, but she also has another movie, Jolene, in the works. However, it might be pushed back a bit in order to finish Christmas of Many Colors on schedule.

If that isn’t enough, Parton is also launching an extensive tour on June 3. So far, 14 dates have been scheduled with more to follow. It’s the country singer’s first in 20 years and yet another reason for die-hard fans to get excited.
