Russell Crowe Recalls First Meeting With ‘The Nice Guys’ Co-Star Ryan Gosling

Russell Crowe visited The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday to promote his upcoming film with Ryan Gosling, entitled The Nice Guys. During the interview, the 52-year-old actor recalled the first time he met Gosling.

It was a few years ago when Russell Crowe binged on Ryan Gosling’s movies, and it got him interested in working with the actor. Crowe then arranged a “quiet little intimate dinner,” with just them and their significant others, so they could talk about working on a project together, as reported by People. However, their first meeting did not go as planned, and it was not as quiet and as intimate they thought.

Russell Crowe’s then wife, Danielle Spencer, was a big fan of Gosling and decided to invite more than 10 of her girlfriends, including her mother, to the supposedly intimate meeting.

“Well I can’t have him walk into the room with his girlfriend where there’s like sixteen women.”

Russell Crowe had decided to balance the female to male ratio by inviting a few of his friends.

“I started calling blokes. I called RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan. I called Eli Roth, I called all his friends and got them all together. So Ryan walks into the room expecting this intimate dinner party and there’s 30 people.”

It was only when they started working on The Nice Guys that Russell was able to explain to Ryan what happened on their first meeting years ago.

Ryan Gosling also shared that he was so impressed with Russell Crowe’s rugby knowledge that he thought he was a “rugby whisperer.” In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, as reported by NZ Herald, Gosling shared his thoughts on the night when he watched a rugby game with his co-star and Russell knew exactly how and where the rugby players were going to move during the game.

“I sat down next to him and he had a big iced chest of ginger beer and a big chest of vodka and he just kept pouring me drinks. And I was like, ‘I have to do this I’m going to be working with this guy, I have to do this, I have to try and at least go like one for three.”

“I’m getting more and more soupy as the night goes on, and by the end of the night, I look around and everyone’s wearing white hats.”

The Nice Guys is a comedy action film set in the 1970s where Crowe plays an enforcer who partners up with a private investigator, Ryan Gosling’s character, in order to find a missing girl.

There have been several promotional videos released for The Nice Guys, where Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling are shown having a therapy session to iron out their issues before they promote their film. In the videos, Melissa Rauch of The Big Bang Theory acts as their therapist.

On Tuesday, Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling arrived in a vintage convertible at the Hollywood premiere of The Nice Guys. The men looked dapper in their suits and were all smiles as they posed on the red carpet. The movie will premiere at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival before hitting theaters on May 20.
