Nick Jonas Cancels Shows To Take A Stand Against North Carolina’s HB2 Bill

Nick Jonas is the latest musician to cancel shows in North Carolina. The singer has joined a long line of entertainers taking a stand against the state for passing House Bill 2, or HB2, which is more commonly known as the bathroom bill. Many see HB2 as being directly discriminatory towards the transgender community and many celebrities are taking a stand against the state for passing the bill, even though they realize their fans in North Carolina will suffer the most as a result of the boycott.

Jonas is currently touring with Demi Lovato, so the performers work together in deciding where to take their tour and at which venues they will perform. Together, Nick and Demi have decided to cancel all of their North Carolina shows in light of the news that the state has passed HB2, which mandates all persons must use the public restrooms in accordance with the assigned gender received at birth. As Jonas stated on Ellen, this law singles out the transgender community and specifically discriminates against those undergoing gender reassignment.

“Demi and I had a lot of conversations together and with the team about the best way to handle it,” Jonas explained. “We are very aware of our strong LGBT community fanbase and the support they’ve given us and the support we want to give them. And this was a time where I feel like we said we have to make a bold statement, put our foot down and stand firm in something we believe in.”

While Nick says that both he and Lovato are confident that they have made the right decision, Jonas admits he feels bad for the fans that won’t be able to attend his shows. The singer says he hopes his fans will understand and be equally decisive in standing against the North Carolina ruling.

“It’s unfortunate for the fans there and for us because we want to go play as many shows as possible. But in our minds it’s the right thing to do, and hopefully our fans will stand united with us.”

For many months now, rumors have circulated that there’s something between Nick Jonas and Kate Hudson, but the question of whether it’s friendship or something more has never really been answered. The two have been spotted out together, but neither Kate nor Nick would ever reveal the exact nature of their relationship. When Nick recently stopped by Ellen DeGeneres’ show, the talk show host seemed determined to get a definitive answer from Jonas.

“You’re really single right now,” asked DeGeneres, subtly getting into the topic of his relationship with Hudson.

“I really am,” Jonas confirmed. “Yeah, I am.”

That seemed to be the end of the conversation, at least as far as Nick was concerned; but, Ellen wasn’t so easily dissuaded.

“So how’s Kate Hudson doing? She’s good?”

“She’s great,” Jonas responds, holding back an ear-to-ear grin and a chuckle. “We had a group dinner the night before the Met Gala. Lots of people and she was there and I was there.”

“It was a group,” Jonas added, again, as though hoping to convince DeGeneres.

“Uh-huh,” Ellen says. “Whatever.”

It seems Ellen was as skeptical of Nick Jonas, as have been many of his fans on the topic of his relationship to Kate Hudson. While the couple may be just friends, it seems as though both Hudson and Jonas are enjoying the game. There’s no small hint of playfulness in the way Hudson and Jonas like to keep the media and public guessing about their relationship; though, at some point, the truth will certainly have to come out.
