Man Too Impatient To Wait For Bathroom, So He Shoots At The Person Inside

A man from Vernon, Connecticut, may have earned the title of most impatient person of the week after shooting at someone in the bathroom because he was tired of waiting to use it.

According to the Huffington Post, 22-year-old Shawn Cummins was arrested on Sunday morning after nearly murdering his neighbor over a toilet. He reportedly went over to his neighbor’s apartment at around 2 a.m. to hang out. Somewhere during the course of the night, Cummins became thoroughly intoxicated, to the point that he overreacted when his neighbor wouldn’t get out of the bathroom fast enough.

Local news Fox 61 reported that police received a call about a drunk individual who had fired a gun inside the apartment building. They arrived to learn that Shawn Cummins was so impatient for the bathroom that he pulled out his 9mm handgun and fired a single shot through the closed bathroom door. Police say the bullet narrowly missed the person who was inside. The neighbors then ordered him to leave.

Still intoxicated and angry, Shawn Cummins then fired another shot at the outside of the apartment building. Fortunately, nobody was harmed from either shot. According to Detective James Grady, police arrived at around 3 a.m. to find Cummins still obviously drunk; but, he did not put up a struggle when officers brought him into custody.

Authorities determined that the bathroom shooter was the legal owner of the 9mm handgun and had a valid Connecticut pistol permit to show for it. However, the bathroom incident launched an investigation, which led detectives to find and seize a 0.45 caliber handgun and a 12 gauge shotgun from Shawn Cummins’ own apartment. The handgun and permit were also taken as evidence.

He had apparently hid the handgun in the waistband of his pants when he went over to hang out with his friends. Presumably, his neighbors were not aware of the fact that their drunken buddy was carrying a loaded weapon. It can also be assumed that they are probably no longer friends with him.

Shawn Cummins is now facing a list of criminal charges, including first-degree reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, and the unlawful discharge of a firearm. While he may have had the right to own the weapon, he didn’t have the right to fire it recklessly at someone using the bathroom, especially since he was intoxicated at the time.

According to NBC Connecticut, he was originally being held on a $20,000 cash bond, but the judge decided to release him after the Monday arraignment at Rockville Superior Court, trusting that Shawn Cummins will show up to his court date. It’s unclear if Cummins has an attorney.

The reactions to the bathroom shooter story have been mixed on Facebook, with many claiming Shawn Cummins is a perfect example of irresponsible gun ownership.

“There’s no excuse… attempted murder,” said one comment. “He knew there was a person in there.”

Bu,t another Facebook user had some compassion for the man and claimed that the alcohol was the culprit behind the near-deadly incident.

“I’m just an old mother hen sounding off here, but please remember that Shawn is someones son, brother and friend. Specifically, my family’s friend. Alcohol is the demon here. Very thankful no one got hurt and pray that he gets help.”
