John Oliver Slams Rodrigo Duterte As The ‘Trump Of The East’

John Oliver is no stranger to mocking Donald Trump. In fact, Trump has consistently found himself as the butt of many jokes on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that Oliver opened this week’s show with his usual mocking of Trump. However, according to the Washington Post, after taking a couple of jabs at Donald Trump, John Oliver used his opening monologue to slam Phillipenes presidential front-runner Rodrigo Duterte as the “Trump of the East.”

Host John Oliver clearly didn’t think that Rodrigo Duterte had been given enough attention by the media and was keen to give him a level of attention similar to what Donald Trump has been attracting. Rodrigo Duterte is best known as the long-time mayor of one of the Phillipenes’ southern cities, Davao. Since entering the country’s presidential race, he’s quickly risen to become the front-runner for the position. However, his support has largely been garnered through his extreme stance on crime and consistently promising to kill all criminals within the country when he becomes president. Duterte is also well known for his attitudes towards women and has been incredibly vocal in representing them, often speaking of his sexual exploits in public.

According to Raw Story, during the most recent episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the host described Duterte as a “colorful character, to say the least” before going to on to speak about some of the presidential candidate’s most obscene moments.

John Oliver then went on to say that “Duterte routinely kisses his female supporters, once called the pope ‘a son of a b***h,’ all of which has earned him a reputation as the ‘Trump of the East,’ a title previously held by a burnt wonton covered in scarecrow pubes. Now, Duterte has also suggested if elected he would kill five criminals every week, which may not be an idle promise. Since he’s been mayor, extrajudicial death squads have reportedly killed over 1,000 people, and while he denies any involvement in that he does admit he’s got blood on his hands.”

At the time of the show’s recording, Duterte’s lead in the Phillipenes was 11 points over his opponents, making it very likely that he would become the country’s next president. John Oliver, however, wasn’t hopeful that his comments would make any difference to Duterte’s fortunes, telling viewers that while the internet had told him he’d destroyed Donald Trump, the former Apprentice star is now the presumptive nominee for the Republican party.

Whether it be Donald Trump or politicians from further afield, John Oliver has revelled in making a mockery of some of politics’ most colourful figures. Oliver has been consistently critical of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, previously launching his own #MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain social media campaign. However, the Republican party as a whole is regularly at the receiving end of British comedian John Oliver’s jokes. John Oliver regularly points out some of the most absurd happenings in American politics, so it’s easy to understand why presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump has featured so heavily on his show.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver returned on Monday night following a one-week break. The weekly show sees British comedian John Oliver tackle some of the biggest stories of the week. The show is currently in the middle of its third season, with each season typically lasting for around 35 episodes. Donald Trump’s presidential campaign has arguably contributed to a large part of John Oliver’s recent success, with segments taken from the show about Donald Trump attracting over 80 million views across YouTube and Facebook. The success that the series has brought HBO is likely to see it being renewed again in the near future.
