Theo James’ Girlfriend Ruth Kearney Initially Intimidated To Play A Pretty Girl’s Role
While the new Netflix series Flaked is garnering positive reviews, Theo James’ girlfriend, Ruth Kearney, was initially uncertain if she could pull off the role of London, a newcomer waitress who catches the interest of the people in Venice Beach. The mysterious damsel soon sees herself in a love triangle after Chip (Will Arnett) and his best friend Dennis (David Sullivan) find her beguiling.
In an interview with Fox News Magazine, Ruth admitted that she was intimated by London’s character at first.
“The guys talk about her, they have a little fight about who’s gonna ask her out. You think, ‘Oh, she’s just the love interest.’ But actually, she has a big part to play in Chip’s – the main character’s – unraveling. Before you even meet her, the [other characters] are describing her like, ‘Oh my God, she’s got a sick body,’ or ‘She’s like, this insane hot girl!’ It was just funny to read that, and [I’m] like, ‘Oh, can I play that?'”
What made Ruth comfortable was the realization that Chip and Dennis were not merely charmed by London’s looks but by her mysterious quality.
“I think the point is, what makes her attractive to these guys is that she has this mysterious quality,” she said.
The Irish actress has nothing but praises for her co-star Will as well as the show’s writer for producing something that people could relate to.
“He’s really, really funny, and really nice and really generous. He’s just a very down-to-earth cool guy, so I think I really lucked out. [Arnett and co-writer Mark Chappell] were very much wanting to make it real and authentic for everyone, and they really allowed discoveries to be made when we were doing scenes.”
Despite the feedback Flaked is getting, Ruth is determined to stay grounded. In a previous interview with the Irish Mirror, she claimed that she never accepts roles based on the fame that they could bring her. What draws her to an offer is the challenge behind it.
“I’m not in this industry to become famous, I don’t go for jobs because they will make me well known, it’s so hopefully they will lead me on to more interesting roles.”
To further prove her point, Ruth does not read reviews about her shows. Instead of searching for herself online, what she prefers is to meet normal people who are actually watching the show. This principle might be one of the reasons why she and Theo have been going strong for the past six years.
The Divergent actor once told Flaunt magazine that he would typically shy away from social media posts as he wanted to preserve the elements of his private life.
“I don’t have it and I never will. Other actors I know are really good at it and they rock and roll it, but it’s not for me. If I post a picture of us having a drink now and get loads of views or comments and stuff, then suddenly you’re quite exposed and you’re in a world of work. I just like being present.”
The British actor believes that many find it difficult to be in the present, and one of the reasons is the lure of a computer. He is an advocate of being mindful of what is currently happening.
Theo and Ruth indeed do not have social media accounts, but whenever they find time to take vacations, fans make it a point to share photos of them online. The two are reportedly engaged, although there is no confirmed wedding date yet as they are focused on their individual projects.
