A Mother Is Missing

Dateline NBC will begin their coverage with details on Dominique “Nique” Leili’s disappearance in 2011. She was last seen at her home smoking a cigarette after a date night with her husband. The next day no one knew where she had gone. It took two days for Matthew Leili to contact his wife’s sister to tell her she was missing. He finally placed a call to police to file a missing persons report.

They seemed like a couple who was madly in love. They had even married on Valentine’s Day 13 years prior to her disappearance. But over time, the marriage deteriorated and was often plagued with bouts of arguing. After Dominique Leili went missing, Matthew told police they had a fight over sex, which he believed may have upset her, according to CNN.

“I wanted sex, but the sex we`ve been having has been just, you know, her rolling over on me or me rolling over on her. It hasn’t been anything special, you know? So I said to her, you know,, Hey, how about you — how about you put on an outfit? I think that might have set her off.”

A Body In The Woods
After the disagreement, Matthew Leili told detectives that Nique stormed off. But instead of looking for his wife like any loving husband, Matthew Leili looked into having her committed to a mental institution, and he also inquired about a divorce. It was Nique’s family who got the ball rolling by organizing searches and feeding information to the media. Over a week later, Dominique “Nique” Leili’s body was found under a mound of debris in the woods by her friends and family.

What no one could understand was why a loving and devoted mother would walk off and leave her family. During their investigation, the police found that there were bitter fights, not only over sex but also over money. Many of the arguments were captured on video, showing an enraged Dominique “Nique” Leili, who was angry that Matthew had asked her about the way she had spent her money.

On another part of the tape, one can hear Nique telling Matthew to get out of her way as she attempts to leave the house. It seemed that leaving was one of Nique’s ways of dealing with the conflict with Matthew. While the tapes depicted Nique Leili as unstable woman who was prone to anger, Matthew can be heard trying to calm her down, and speaking in a low voice on some of the tapes. It was almost as if he knew that someday the tapes would be important.

People who know Dominique Leili believe they know why she was always agitated. Matthew Leili, a security systems salesman, tried to control her every move by installing tracking devices on her cell phone and in her car. Authorities say he was a man obsessed with keeping tabs on his wives, a fact that was evidenced by more than 20 cameras that were installed at the couple’s home.

He’d done it before. His ex wife testified that decades before, Matthew had also tried to control her by making a clone of her beeper. He was also aggressive — even pushing her down on the floor on one occasion, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post.

Dateline NBC’s coverage of the Dominique “Nique” Leili, Matthew Leili case is not an episode you’ll want to miss. Watch Dateline this Sunday, May 8, at 10/9 p.m. central on NBC.
