‘Call Of Duty’ Vs. ‘Battlefield 1’: Is Activision Going To Lose The First Person Shooter War?

Fans of both Call of Duty and Battlefield are making a lot of noise since the release of the latter’s World War I trailer.

The big question has arrived: Which game will perform better?

The reception of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was generally one of uncertainty, as players have been raising much concern about the timeline that each game takes place in. Infinite Warfare looks to be set in a futuristic period, consistent with the last few games that Activision has released. If you’re not familiar with the history of Call of Duty, this has not always been the case. Call of Duty was originally set in time periods dating back to 1894, when combat was simply boots on the ground and artillery.

Much has changed, however, and combat is vastly different. A perfect example of this is Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, Activision’s latest. No longer are players simply confined to the ground. They’re able to run along walls, use special abilities that depend on what class one has chosen to play, and players are even able to swim. While these are welcome changes to the first person shooter community, many have expressed the opinion that they miss the way that the games used to play with earlier war periods.

Battlefield 1, the latest game announced by game developer Dice, appears to have gone in an entirely different direction. The trailer sets the game at a World War I time period, and the combat reminds players of the older first person shooters that they knew and loved. Old-style grenades, dog fights in the air via older model planes, tanks, and all other manner of explosive combat.

In contrast to the feedback of Call of Duty, many are already praising Dice for taking large scale first person shooters to their roots. Obviously, preference comes into play when comparing both games. If YouTube is any indication, however, Infinite Warfare is certainly getting its share of dislikes for their trailers.

According to Kotaku, the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare trailer has been receiving a ton of dislikes since it was released. This isn’t the first time that such a game has received heavy disapproval in the eyes of fans. As a result, Activision has responded to the criticism.

Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg said, “The reveal trailer for Black Ops II, which took the franchise into the future for the first time, had the most dislikes of any reveal trailer we had ever made at that time.

“And that, of course, went on to become our most successful game ever.”

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare could very well be a successful game, as Hirshberg pointed out that previous games were successful. He went on to report that while there are many players who would love to see Call of Duty go back to its roots, there are just as many players who want to see the game evolve into new mechanics and new atmospheres. This is evidenced by the welcome inclusion of the news of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 getting a remaster.

A particular Dice representative was not without his opinions on Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, either. According to Screenrant, Roland Smedberg, senior video and media director/editor at EA Dice, made a series of tweets, slamming the game for what he feels are 2010 graphics and grade school editing. The tweets have since been removed, though it remains clear that Infinite Warfare is under heavy scrutiny.

What do you think of the different time periods between Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Battlefield 1? Does one interest you over the other? Will you get both? Let us know in the comments.
