The pregnant teenager who has been diagnosed with the Zika virus has decided that she wants to keep her baby. Sara Mujica, 17, went to see fiancé Victor Cruz, 19, in Central America in February. She briefly returned home to Danbury, Connecticut, in March, with the complaint of a fever and rash all over her body. At that time, it was discovered that not only was she pregnant, but she was infected with the Zika virus.
The news came as a shock to the pregnant teen because she was told that she would never be able to conceive a child after a serious meningitis infection at the age of 15. Sara considered an abortion but decided that she would have her baby and believed that God would take care of her child.
Sarah explained that after she received the devastating diagnosis that she considered abortion, the Daily Mail reported. She felt scared that her child could have brain damage and/or microcephaly, which causes the baby’s head to be much smaller due to abnormal brain development.
“No one wants to go through Zika when they are pregnant and have a baby that may be deformed. I am very nervous and I don’t know what to do, exactly. I don’t want to say I don’t know if I should have an abortion or just take what God gave me. I’m not happy that my baby is going to be born with Zika, but God gave me a miracle.”
Mujica decided to carry out her pregnancy to full term and “deal with any health issues that come up.”. She cited one of her reasons why she couldn’t have an abortion was her religious beliefs. Sarah explained that she found out she was pregnant on March 14, and just days after she began showing symptoms of the Zika virus. She had a rash all over her body and came down with a high fever.
“The current recommendations would be for Sara to confer with her obstetrician and get periodic ultrasounds to find whether the development of the head is continuing on an appropriate basis. But we know that ultrasounds, although helpful, are also not perfect. In the best of hands the ultrasounds may not detect the microcephaly.”
Mujica feared the worst and began to suspect that she could have the Zika virus. Sarah knew that the Zika virus was a huge concern in Central America. However, she didn’t want to believe that she could have such a terrifying illness, and convinced herself that the rash could be chicken pox, People reported.
Recently, the pregnant teen flew back to Honduras to be with her fiancé, Victor and with the plan to get married in the next few weeks. When she flew back to Central America, she knew her doctor’s recommendation was to stay in the country and receive treatment for the Zika virus. She claims she didn’t have the money to change her flight schedule. The Connecticut Health Department requested that Sarah returns home for immediate treatment. The couple plans to move to Connecticut together in July, with the plan to seek treatment at that time.
It isn’t apparent if Victor Cruz was infected with the Zika virus. The CDC issued a general guideline for couples, stating that those who are actively trying to conceive a child should wait and use protection for six months after being exposed to the Zika virus. In the meantime, Mujica has launched a GoFundMe page, requesting donations to help her with the financial burden of having a child with Zika virus.
