Candace Cameron Bure Opens Up About Her Battle With Bulimia

Though Full House might have presented Candace Cameron Bure’s life through rose-colored glasses, she hasn’t always had it easy struggling with Bulimia.

The 40-year-old actress and co-host of The View got candid in an interview with Entertainment Tonight (ET) on Tuesday about her battle with her eating disorder. Bure delved into the nitty gritty details with ET’s Jennifer Peros.

Despite growing up in Hollywood, Bure’s family shielded her from the plight that can accompany body image, writes People Magazine.

“My parents were wonderful, and protective of not allowing the entertainment industry to shape me into what they believed a standard of body image of perfection was.”

Still, while her husband and former NHL star Valeri Bure would be away on the road, Bure admits to turning to food to cope with her anxiety of being alone.

“I kind of lost my identity in a sense and what happened was I turned to food for comfort when my husband was traveling and when I was alone.”

The now Fuller House star admits that she had a “very unhealthy relationship with food,” she said on ET. Though she was aware of her negative relationship, she didn’t tend to her struggle immediately. As a result of not acknowledging her sickness, she developed Bulimia.

For several years, Bure kept her struggle to herself. In fact, Bure admitted to ET that she was embarrassed to tell her husband about her disorder.

Bure explained to Peros that she “dealt with it for several years” on her own. Overtime, she realized that “it wasn’t about body image and trying to feel good–It was about trying to find comfort or fill voids” within her life. Still, it wouldn’t be forever that the Fuller House Star would suffer. In fact, Bure told ET that she can remember the exact day she knew she had a disorder and it was time to find help. Candace Cameron Bure explains she was sitting in church on her own, while her husband was yet again on the road. She then went on to explain how that service had changed her life.

“The sermon somehow just spoke to my heart and that’s when I directly went to my pastor and said ‘I need help.’ It felt so good to admit to someone…That was the moment I went, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore.’ “

Upon telling her husband about her struggle, Bure told ET that her he was incredibly supportive and helped her defeat her disorder.

Since recovery, Bure has become very vocal in the fight against eating disorders. On Tuesday, Candace Cameron Bure participated in the Eating Recovery Day Panel in New York City, reports People Magazine. In 2011, the star published what became her New York Times bestseller, Reshaping It All, where she discusses her battle with Bulimia and how she changed her lifestyle mentally, physically and spiritually.

Candace Cameron Bure has made it a point to educate her three teenagers on the importance of body positivity.

“The most important thing for me to teach my children is about health and fitness… It’s about taking care of your body and eating foods that are good for you and getting the right exercise that you need…It’s just about living a healthy life for longevity and a healthy heart.”
