Taylor Swift’s New Grunge Look: Why Her Style Changed Overnight

Taylor Swift’s street style has taken a 180-degree turn. The singer is attempting to bring back the ’90s grunge trend.

When Taylor Swift started out, she was known for her ringlets, spring dresses, and cowboy boots. The singer’s style has evolved a lot since then. Swift has rocked everything from floral retro dresses and oxford shoes to crop tops and skirts paired with sky-high heels. Now, Swift has undergone another drastic style change after she debuted her new platinum blonde hair on the cover of Vogue and at the Coachella Music Festival.

The country-turned-pop singer is riding out this look, no matter what. Taylor traded in her signature red lipstick for an oxblood stain when she was spotted wearing a plaid flannel dress and combat boots in New York City over the weekend. There’s no doubt that all eyes will be on the pop star at tonight’s Met Gala, which is set to take place in New York City. Will she bring her new grunge look to the red carpet?

Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour surely hopes so. Last month, she explained Swift’s makeover for Vogue’s May cover story on the Today show.

“We very much wanted to give Taylor a new look, make her into a sort of a rock n’ roll chick… We love the way she looks, we think she looks young and modern and different and I can’t wait to see what she’s going to wear on May 2.”

She explained the pop star’s startling new look once again in a Vogue podcast.

“We thought that we could take Taylor — who is a beautiful, beautiful girl but has been a little bit more conservative in her fashion choices — and turn her into a Hedi Slimane rock n’ roll girl.”

Even Taylor Swift agrees that this is the best look she’s ever had. She took to Instagram to praise her new look and cover, and to even praise Wintour’s style know-how.

Still, Taylor Swift is looking less like Taylor Swift and more like Courtney Love these days. As previously stated, the 26-year-old was spotted leaving a pre-Met Gala dinner in a gray plaid flannel dress, a black shiny leather jacket, and black high-heeled boots that resemble the classic Doc Martens from the ’90s.

No, she wasn’t really wearing a pair of Doc Martens. In fact, Taylor slipped into a pair of Louis Vuitton’s fashion hiking boots. According to Vogue, those boots are already fall’s must-have boots, even more so now that Taylor is wearing them. The publication has been reporting a lot of stories about Taylor’s edgy new look in the past few days.

Before she was seen in the grungy dress, Taylor Swift wore another plaid look in New York City on Sunday. The pop star was seen running errands in a gray plaid flannel shirt, a white T-Shirt, and denim ripped jeans. Swift kept her eyes covered with bright blue tinted sunglasses and wore a pair of white classic Ked sneakers on her feet.

In case you’re wondering what’s written on Taylor’s white T-Shirt, the Hollywood Life has the scoop on what she’s wearing. She was photographed wearing a Bad Habits Good Vibes pocket tee from Amuse Society, which only costs $32. Meanwhile, her $80 sunglasses were designed by Local Supply.

When she was spotted partying at the Up and Down Club with Victoria’s Secret models Martha Hunt and Lily Aldridge on Saturday night, Swift wore a lacy see-through black Haney jumpsuit with black lace-up boots.

Though it seems like her style has changed overnight, the singer revealed that “high-waisted stuff” is still her favorite fashion trend of all time in a video for Vogue.

Taylor Swift is said to be the co-chair of this year’s Met Gala, along with Wintour, Idris Elba, Karl Lagerfeld, Nicolas Ghesquiere, Miuccia Prada, and Jonathan Ive. It’ll be interesting to see if Swift’s new grunge style will fit this year’s theme: “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.”

When Anna Wintour was asked if Taylor Swift may wear Saint Laurent to the Met Gala, she coyly responded, “That level of detail, I cannot answer.”
