The 2016 Met Gala is set to take over the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City on May 2, and it’s sure to bring out some of the most daring and looks ever seen on the red carpet.

Solange Knowles hit the 2015 Met Gala red carpet in this gravity defying outfit that stretched in a circular fan design up to Knowles’ chin. This space age design most definitely stopped traffic at the big fashion event, and has to be one of the most unique designs to ever walk the annual fashion event’s red carpet.

Lady Gaga in Balenciaga (2015)

At the 2015 Met Gala, Lady Gaga, who’s no stranger to a fashion risk or two, made a serious statement with this big Balenciaga design. Gaga also set-off her low-cut kimono-inspired Met gala gown with a black beaded head piece, black dangle earrings, and huge platform boots.

Madonna in Louis Vuitton (2009)

Madonna slipped into this Louis Vuitton creation for the 2009 Met Gala, which featured thigh high black boots, a blue mini dress and a pretty bizarre turquoise bunny ears headpiece that was tied around the singer’s hair. Madonna also set-off her very unique look with black lace fingerless gloves.

Rihanna’s 2015 Guo Pei gown certainly needed a whole lot of room. The singer’s big yellow Met Gala gown was so detailed that designer Guo Pei later told the Daily Mail that it actually took him two years to finish the huge intricate design.

Kim Kardashian went full-on floral when she attended the Met Gala in 2013 while pregnant with first child North West. Kardashian’s Met look came complete with built-in gloves and a turtle neck, though Kim’s sister, Khloe Kardashian, later admitted that she wasn’t exactly the biggest fan of the unique Met outfit.

“I think Kim is beautiful. I wish, like, the gloves … I just felt like it was too covered somehow, just because her body, her boobs, her belly … just all looked like one,” Kardashian admitted during an appearance on The Today Show of Kim’s Met Gala look.

Sarah Jessica Parker in a Philip Treacy headdress and H&M dress (2015)

Sarah Jessica Parker turned heads when she attended the prestigious fashion event in a huge Philip Treacy headpiece in 2015. Parker, who’s certainly no stranger to the Met Gala, later revealed to Cosmopolitan that her look was actually created using sustainable materials.

“They reuse fabric and vintage pieces and organic cottons … they basically dug up every piece of old fabric they could find in Sweden, and it’s all been incorporated into this,” Sarah said of her unique H&M Met Gala look. “I knew I wanted poppies all over, and so we found somebody in New York to hand-embroider all these.”

Katy Perry literally lit up the Met Gala red carpet when she attended the big fashion event in 2010. Perry donned a blush pink off the shoulder gown with a twist at the time, which featured a very special and unique illuminating feature.

Katy’s Met gown incorporated LED lights that lit up different luminous colors as the “This Is How We Do” singer made her way into the event.

Elizabeth Banks wore this mismatched Mary Katrantzou creation to the Met Gala in 2012. Bank’s outfit featured a bizarre shoulder piece that covered her neck, which she then coupled with a peplum top and silk skirt which all featured contrasting designs.
