‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Spinoff Is Official: Kurt Sutter Confirms ‘Dark And Beautiful’ Mayan Story Is One Step Closer To Reality

Sons of Anarchy fans, this is the much-awaited news you have been hoping to hear about your favorite show.

According to CinemaBlend, show creator Kurt Sutter has confirmed that a spinoff of the cult FX show, Sons of Anarchy, is in active development and could hit your TV screens much sooner than you expected. The premature termination of his show The Bastard Executioner has meant that Sutter has been able to re-engage with his most beloved project, and that could only be good news for the original show’s fans.

While news of a Sons of Anarchy prequel or a spinoff have been doing the rounds of the rumor mills ever since the show about an outlaw motorcycle club came to an end in December 2014, this is the first time that the creator of the show has officially confirmed that a spinoff inspired from the original show is being actively developed by him.

Taking to Twitter, Sutter announced that Sons of Anarchy‘s Mayan spinoff got “one step closer to reality,” before teasing fans about the story being “dark and beautiful.” Isn’t that just what one would expect from him?

Last week, TheInquisitr reported about the entire cast of Sons of Anarchy getting together for a reunion at the Space City Comic Con which is to be held in Houston, Texas, in May this year. Reports suggested that the details of an upcoming prequel, which has been touted by multiple sources over the last few months, were to be announced at the event.

But while there was no official confirmation from any of those involved with the original show itself, now Sutter’s announcement puts all those rumors to rest. It is in fact not a Sons of Anarchy prequel which is in development, as expected by many of the show’s fans, but a spinoff which will probably explore the biker subculture through a Spanish point of view, something Sutter has confessed interests him deeply in the past.

“I would do a contemporary piece, not a prequel, and place it far enough away from Northern California that it wouldn’t step on the mythology that’s already been told,” he had said at the end of last year, before hinting that fans could expect some crossovers of familiar characters. “It doesn’t mean that there couldn’t be some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed.”

One of the characters who has been tipped to return in the spinoff is Jax Teller, played by Charlie Hunnam. Although Hunnam’s commitment to a number of movie projects in the near future could mean that roping him would not be easy, his enduring popularity could encourage Sons of Anarchy spinoff’s producers, as well as Kurt Sutter himself, to include him in the upcoming show in some capacity.

According to ComicBook, Sutter’s wife, Katey Sagal, could also return for the show having been widely appreciated for her role as the matriarch Gemma Teller Morrow in Sons of Anarchy. It is rumored that Sutter and Sagal have been scouting locations for a series over the last few weeks, and while earlier full details of the show were not really known, Sutter’s Twitter announcement would invariably have fans drooling over the idea of the dynamic couple partnering once again for the Mayan spinoff.

Sons of Anarchy fans could expect more news on the spinoff in the coming weeks, and while it is still possible that some details would be revealed during the Space City Comic Con in Houston in May, it would not be surprising if fans came to hear about it even before that.
