Gary The Dog Crashes The White House With Carrie Fisher

Gary Fisher’s name has become synonymous with his “mom,” Carrie Fisher.

Gary Fisher showed up on Saturday night at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Other “haves” included Tom Hiddleston, Bernie Sanders, Keegan Michael Key, Kerry Washington, Madeleine Albright, Emma Watson and Helen Mirren, among others.

Gary Fisher, for those who have been out of the loop (or more likely living in a deep, deep well), well… Gary Fisher is a dog.

Gary is a 4-year-old French bulldog who has accompanied Carrie throughout the promotional tour for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, all last year, and who now accompanied her to the White House.

The cuddly canine serves as Carrie’s therapy dog, to help her treat her bipolar disorder. Fisher talked to HT Health about illness and her career.

“Gary is mental also. My mother says Gary is a hooligan. Gary is like my heart. Gary is very devoted to me and that calms me down. He’s anxious when he’s away from me.”

Beyond being a therapy dog, Gary has become a celebrity in his own right. He garners attention, “oohs” and “ahhs,” wherever he goes.

Gary has his own following, having amassed thousands of fans on his Instagram and Twitter accounts.

Part of Gary’s appeal is that he seems to take all the fuss in stride, and in fact, he seems particularly bored by most of it. It doesn’t help that he has a tongue that sticks perpetually out of one side of his head.

But like all dogs, Gary’s ambiance is a reflection of his owner. Writer Karen London addressed it on The Bark. “Like his entertaining guardian,” she wrote, “(Gary) does not disappoint.

“Fisher is talented and funny, but what I like most about her is how much she loves her dog. She is clearly charmed by Gary and wants to spend a lot of her time with him. He is definitely relaxed during interviews, although not everything about the Star Wars world is as pleasing to him. For example, Fisher reports that he found the movie a bit too loud.”

The Frenchie got a smooch from Star Wars newbie Oscar Isaac on Twitter with the caption, “I cant believe we’re gonna check in2hotel/spend a few hrs pressing&im pressing whatever luck we can muster& then…”

On December 3, Gary accompanied his mom to the set of Live With Kelly and Michael, where he left his calling card in the studio. Kelly Ripa crowed, “He can poop on our floor anytime! Seriously, I didn’t mind it at all.”

The little dog’s ability to charm seems to have no limits, although he appears to have some kind of quarrel with BB-8.

Saturday’s dinner with President Obama was no exception. Huffington Post headlined, “Carrie Fisher’s Dog Gary Steals The Show At White House Correspondents’ Dinner.” The article went on to describe Gary exactly as if he were Brad Pitt, outlining his wardrobe and his demeanor.

“Gary, wearing a silky black and brown coat, mingled with other high profile guests and dazzled for cameras.

“Despite all the pomp and circumstance on display on Saturday night, Gary appeared very comfortable.”

With all the hoopla about dog hugging, and snuggling not being good for dogs, the current fad isn’t probably going to affect Gary Fisher one bit. With his massive following, he is never going to have to worry about personal space.
