The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees renew the greatest rivalry in baseball yet again, in a matchup on Friday that will stream live online legally and for free — a game that will be the first of 19 matchups between the Red Sox and Yankees in the 2016 season.
And that’s not all. The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox play the second game of their three-game series at Fenway Park on Saturday. That game will also be made available to stream live online for free, legally, without login credentials required.
The rivalry between the two teams, separated by 215 miles and 19 World Series championships, remains one of the most intense in professional sports. In fact, the rivalry has frequently spilled over into on-field fisticuffs — as the following video, a history of Red Sox-Yankees brawls, documents.
While the Yankees have a record 27 World Series titles on their ledger to just eight for the Red Sox, since 2001 it is Boston getting the better of the rivalry, as far as championships are concerned. Boston has won three in the 21st century, in 2004, 2007, and 2013. The Yankees have won just one World Series since beating the New York Mets in the 2000 Fall Classic. That came in 2009.
To find out how to watch both the Friday and Saturday night New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox games stream live for free, see the streaming links at the bottom of this article. First pitch for both games is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. Eastern Time, 4:10 p.m. Pacific, on Friday April 29 and Saturday April 30, at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.
On Friday, the Yankees send their ace, Masahiro Tanaka, to the mound. The 27-year-old righty, who began his career with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of the Japanese pro baseball league, comes into the game at 1-0 in four starts, with a 2.42 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings pitched, while walking just six.
The Red Sox counter with 23-year-old, second-year lefty Henry Owens, a Boston first-round draft pick in 2011. Making just his second start of the season, Owens will be looking for a major improvement.
In his first outing, Owens lasted only 3 1/3 innings against the Houston Astros, allowing three runs on five hits, including a home run, with four walks and four strikeouts.
Saturday’s scheduled pitching matchup sends Boston right sinkerballer Rick Porcello against New York’s Michael Pineda.
Porcello, at 4-0, has been one of Boston’s most reliable hurlers in the young season, with a 3.51 ERA and 30 strikeouts. But Pineda has struggled, with a 1-2 record and an inflated 6.95 ERA, allowing a league-worst seven home runs already.
Less then a month into the season, neither the Red Sox, nor the Yankees have found their groove yet. The Red Sox come into the three-game series in second place in the American League East — but with a solid but unspectacular record of 12-10.
The Yankees have had trouble getting out of the gate in 2016, and are currently in the unfamiliar position of last place in the AL East, at 8-12.
