Beyonce’s Father Matthew Knowles Responds To Being Called Out On ‘Lemonade’

Beyonce’s Lemonade has stirred up a ton of drama. Most of that drama is being zeroed in on Jay Z and the women he might have had affairs with. Another important element of Lemonade is Beyonce’s estranged relationship with her father, Matthew Knowles.

Knowles, who Beyonce fired as her manager, has fathered a child outside of his marriage to Beyonce’s mother, Tina.

If anyone had a question about Beyonce’s thoughts on her father’s infidelity, they don’t have to look further than the track “Pray You Catch Me.”

In the first song, Beyonce says, “You remind me of my father / A magician / Able to be in two places at once.”

Although many have assumed this is a jab at Jay Z, others say that it’s a direct hit against her father.

Her next voice over in the song says it all.

“In the tradition of men in my blood you come home at 3AM and lie to me.”

Some even think that Lemonade is not about Jay Z’s alleged infidelity, but instead Beyonce has taken the role of her mother Tina and is singing her mother’s thoughts about her ex-husband’s cheating. While we can only speculate, Matthew Knowles did respond to some of the content, especially one line where it’s insinuated that he hit Beyonce.

In an interview with Mark Thompson for his Sirius show Make It Plain, Knowles addressed some of the lyrics, specifically the segment titled “Accountability” in which she reads, “Did he convince you that he was God? … Are you a slave to the back of his hand? Am I talking about your husband or your father?”

Matthew Knowles denied ever hitting Beyonce:

“I can say I have never in my life hit my daughter. So she has never been a slave to the back of my hand because I didn’t believe in that.”

Additionally, Knowles didn’t feel like poking about the origins of who the album is about.

“There’s no way we can get into the mind of Beyoncé. Only Beyoncé can answer specifically who she was talking to…. I would rather not get into speculation. My answer is I don’t know.”

Despite having to clear his name, Knowles sounded like a proud father due to the massive success and critical praise that Beyonce has received from Lemonade in the week that it’s been released. Matthew went on to say that he’s very proud of Beyonce and that this is her best body of work to date.

In a separate interview, Matthew was very vague about the context of Lemonade.

He told E! Online, “Let me tell you who she’s talking about, can I tell you who she’s talking about? She’s talking about you. You put that in context for you personally. She’s talking about you and everybody that is you, that’s who she’s talking about.”

This isn’t the only time Matthew Knowles has commented on his relationship with Beyonce. It was rumored that the two were estranged after his infidelity came to light, not to mention the alleged shady business dealings that resulted in being fired as Beyonce’s manager.

Back in 2015, Knowles told Page Six, “I spent the day with Blue Ivy and Beyoncé a couple of months ago, and actually hope to see them next week or the week after and spend another day doing Play-Doh with Blue Ivy.”

At the time, he was holding seminars on how to get into the entertainment industry. During that time, he made sure to clarify that he wasn’t making money off of his daughter’s name.

“Let me tell you what it’s not — that I’m trying to cash out on Beyoncé. Nothing to do with that.”

Whatever their relationship may be, he was featured in the HBO special Lemonade. Towards the end of the hour-long special, he made an appearance playing around with Beyonce’s daughter, Blue Ivy.
