Demi Lovato has publicly spoken out about her past struggles with body image issues, revealing during an appearance on The Katie Couric Show in 2012 that part of her decision to seek help came after she was cyberbullied by online trolls who would harass her over her appearance.

“People don’t realize how badly verbal harassment and that cyber bullying affects you… They called me ‘fat’ and they called me horrible things,” Lovato said in 2012. “What they said to me sticks to me to this day.”

Demi also got seriously candid about her battle with bulimia in the interview, where she admitted that being over-critical about what she was putting into her body was a “control thing” for her.

“Some people just don’t want to feel the emotions that they have. I think a lot of it is just me numbing myself out so I didn’t have to deal with certain problems or trauma,” Lovato said at the time, admitting that she “would throw up because I thought one glass of juice [would] make me gain five pounds. There was a week where I think I ate two meals.”

Lovato revealed in the interview that being in the spotlight only magnified her body issues and admitted that the cruel comments people posted online made her hate her body.

“I think it definitely amplified things because your life is under a microscope. I was listening to commenters on blog sites who were saying, ‘Oh she looks fat in this outfit’, or whatever and I put that pressure on myself,” Demi said.

“I was going through puberty, I was changing and I didn’t like the fact that I was gaining weight or curves that I didn’t understand,” Lovato continued on The Katie Couric Show. “It’s difficult for girls with eating disorders around that time because your body is changing into a woman basically.”
