The Miami Dolphins cut wide receiver Chad Johnson (formerly Chad Ochocinco) just one day after his domestic violence arrest, and HBO’s Hard Knocks cameras were there when he received the news from head coach Joe Philbin.
Johnson was arrested for allegedly assaulting his wife, Evelyn Lozada, who has now filed for divorce.
As captured on this video, both men seem to handle the difficult and awkward exit interview professionally.
Johnson had hoped to get his pro football career back on track with the Dolphins after a disappointing season with the New England Patriots.
Coach Philbin told the media that it wasn’t just the one occurrence that led to Chad Johnson’s separation from the Dolphins:
“As with any type of these decisions, it was not an easy one, it was not reactive, nor was it based on one single incident. In making these decisions we base our evaluations on a set of criteria that support our organizational goals and include a player’s performance both on and off the field.”
Chad Johnson released this statement after his contract was terminated by the Dolphins:
“I would like to apologize to everyone for the recent events that have occurred. I would like to wish Evelyn well and will never say anything bad about her because I truly love her to death. I will continue to be positive and train hard for another opportunity in the NFL. To all the fans and supporters I have disappointed, you have my sincerest apologies. I will stay positive and get through this tough period in my life.”
