Watch Liverpool Vs. Newcastle United Live Stream: Rafa Benitez Returns To Anfield Facing Relegation Danger

Liverpool faces Newcastle United in the latest installment of an English football rivalry that dates back to 1893, a match that will live stream with a whole new twist as beloved former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez returns to Anfield with the club he has guided for just the last six weeks.

And for Benitez, the situation is immediately a desperate one as he must get a win over his old club — now managed by former Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp — just to pull Newcastle out of the relegation zone. With a win, and loss or draw by Sunderland who host Arsenal on Sunday, Newcastle would rise from 19th to 17th on the Barclays Premier League table, at least temporarily out of danger.

Benitez remains held in high regard by the Anfield faithful, after leading Liverpool to a 2005 triumph in the UEFA Champions League, as well as an FA Cup the following season.

Newcastle has won just one game of the six played since Benitez took the helm on March 11, with only two draws in that span. But one of those draws came last week when the Magpies held visiting top four side Manchester City to a 1-1 stalemate, giving the team at least some feeling of momentum as Benitez takes the team into Anfield where Liverpool are making a final push to edge into the Barclays Premier League top four as well.

Newcastle can also take heart from the fact that, back on December 6, they handed Liverpool a stunning 2-0 defeat at St. James Park. Watch highlights of that Newcastle victory in the video below.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. British Summer Time at Anfield football stadium in Liverpool, England, on Saturday, April 23. That’s 10 a.m. United States Eastern Time, 7 a.m. Pacific.

Liverpool and Newcastle United have faced each other in the English Football League 172 times since first squaring off in Division Two, more than 122 years ago.

Since then, Liverpool has beaten Newcastle United in 82 games while the Tyneside team has won 50, with 40 ending in draws.

In the last 10 matches, going back to 2011, Liverpool has won five and lost three with two draws.

Liverpool manager Klopp said that he welcomes the return of Benitez and encouraged Anfield fans to greet the former Liverpool boss warmly.

“He’s a very successful manager, nice person! Be louder than you have ever been. That’s absolutely okay,” Klopp said. “That’s how I would say hello to a good old friend. He still lives around here, nobody has to ignore this wonderful moment. Do how you feel!”

Despite a run of sparkling form that saw Liverpool eliminate Klopp’s former club, Borussia Dortmund, from the UEFA Europa League — putting Liverpool in that competition’s semifinals — and a crushing 4-0 defeat Merseyside rivals Everton, Klopp comes into the showdown with Newcastle trying to work around a series of injuries to his team.

Christian Benteke, Jordan Henderson, Emre Can, and Divock Origi will all miss the Saturday match.
