‘Better Call Saul’ Cliffhanger Finale: Exit Jimmy McGill, Enter Saul Goodman? Bob Odenkirk Speaks

Better Call Saul Season 2 finale titled “Klick” left the audience on a cliffhanger with James “Jimmy” McGill, portrayed by Bob Odenkirk, (Breaking Bad) presumably set to be exposed by his big brother Chuck McGill in a plot that could lead to his disbarment, ultimately ending his unpredictable career in the law.

Warning: from here on, this article contains Better Call Saul spoilers for Season 2 finale

In the final episode of Better Call Saul Season 2, both Chuck and Jimmy are caught in a lie. Chuck lies about their mother’s last words before she died in the hospital bed while Jimmy lies about having been in the copy store before coming to Chuck’s aid following a small period of unconsciousness.

Jimmy also reveals to Chuck that he was actually the one responsible for the wrong address on Chuck’s Mesa Verde documents, which stated 1216 instead of 1261. However, what Jimmy doesn’t know is the fact that during all this time, Chuck has been recording their conversation. As such, Jimmy is caught in a situation which he might find hard to come out of as Chuck moves on to expose him.

Now, when asked byEntertainment Weekly about Jimmy’s cliffhanger situation in Better Call Saul Season 2 finale, Bob Odenkirk said that he does not “know what can happen next. I don’t know how Jimmy keeps his law license.” However, he was pretty sure that showrunners Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould would be able to find a solution to the current situation.

Bob Odenkirk is convinced, however, that Jimmy does not get disbarred following the big reveal with regard to the part he played in the wrong address on Chuck’s documents. Chuck was convinced that Jimmy was involved and now that he has the proof, Jimmy’s name on the bar could be under threat. But Odenkirk doesn’t think so, though he does not “know how he doesn’t get disbarred.”

“He doesn’t, though, because Saul has a license, we assume,” Odenkirk adds.

So at this point, Odenkirk mentions Saul (Saul Goodman), the name character in the series title (Better Call Saul). Saul Goodman is expected to eventually become the trade name of Jimmy McGill, as portrayed in the predecessor series Breaking Bad.

Better Call Saul cliffhanger finale appears to set the stage for the introduction of Saul Goodman, who, based on his character in the Breaking Bad series, is a criminal lawyer who promotes himself in low-budget advertisements under the tag name “Better Call Saul.” In this past season, Jimmy already showcased his ability to come up with low-budget advertisements, and following his planned fallout with his employers, this could be what drives him to come up with his own brand.

“I think the journey from Jimmy McGill to Saul is like falling off a cliff,” Odenkirk told EW, “but I do think we are close.”

Towards the end of Better Call Saul Season 2, Jimmy manages to get himself fired by Davis & Main and he returns to his salon office. He then pitches Kim Wexler, his girlfriend, the idea of starting a new law firm, Wexler & McGill. Kim accepts the plan and decides it’s better to operate under the same roof with Jimmy as a solo practitioner.

Now, this sets the show on a path that Jimmy could finally apply his ideas on low-budget television commercials without much scrutiny. So is this the point when he comes up with the idea of Saul Goodman as a trade name? Kim Wexler was not in the picture in Breaking Bad, so it would be interesting to see how Jimmy’s partnership with her eventually pans out.

Better Call Saul cliffhanger finale appears to usher in the beginning of the end for Jimmy McGill, but could Saul Goodman arise from the ashes?
