Reports broke on Sunday of Joe Manganiello cancelling an appearance at a charity event due to some undisclosed health issues. TMZ is reporting that the mystery illness that kept Joe out of the public eye over the weekend was a serious bout of appendicitis.

Manganiello and his wife, Sofia Vergara, were scheduled to act as honorary co-chairs at the Stuart House Benefit in West Hollywood, California, but were not able to do so. Stuart House assists children and families in their recovery from sexual abuse. The event was to raise funds for the charity. Fashion designer John Varvatos is a good friend of Manganiello’s and told ET Online that he had extended the invitation to Joe and Sofia because of Joe’s longtime support of the charity. He commented on Manganiello’s friendship and health issues yesterday.

“Joe’s been a big part of what we’ve done over the years. He’s been a great personal friend. He’s been involved in all of our – the last four or five years – our Stuart House events… Basically they just couldn’t make it because [Manganiello] is recovering… I don’t know a lot about it other than that he’s had a little bit of a health problem. We wish him the best. We thank him for all his support that he’s given us and, most importantly, to get well soon because he’s such a wonderful guy.”

TMZ’s sources stated that Joe went into the hospital late last week to have his appendix removed. When doctors went in, they apparently found a situation that was far worse than Manganiello or anyone else expected. Confirmation of what they found had not been made yet, but one source reported that Joe’s appendix had burst. Manganiello, Sofia Vergara, and their reps have yet to comment on the situation, but Joe did tweet a sweet message about his wife while recovering on Sunday.

Last week, it was announced that Manganiello would not return to The History Channel’s Navy SEAL series Six due to health issues and the physical demands of the role. Walton Goggin of Django Unchained is reportedly replacing him.

Reports about the health issues that led to Joe’s departure from Six stated they were nothing to cause concern — just some ongoing health issues he is dealing with. Radar Online reported that the ongoing health issues are basically burnout. Manganiello has been quite busy lately with work on Pee Wee’s Big Holiday and work on three major movies, one of which is being directed by his brother, Nick Manganiello.

Joe Manganiello is a recovering alcoholic and has been sober for 13 years. Managing his stress level is critical to his continued recovery.

Radar Online’s source told them, “Joe is very focused on his work right now and is committed to staying sober too.”

Joe Manganiello is 39-years-old. He appeared in Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3 as well as several TV shows, including ER, How I Met Your Mother, and One Tree Hill, but he really shot to fame as a result of his role as werewolf Alcide Herveaux on HBO’s True Blood. Of course, many women also know Joe from his roles in Magic Mike and Magic Mike XXL. Manganiello suffered an injury to a bicep in Magic Mike XXL. He underwent surgery to repair the damage, but it remains an ongoing health issue. As a teenager, he was quite the athlete, playing basketball, football, and volleyball.

Joe and Sofia began dating in 2014 and were engaged in December of the same year. They tied the knot nearly a year later, on November 22, 2015, in a ceremony in Palm Beach, Florida.
