NFL Rumors: San Francisco 49ers Drafting Carson Wentz

NFL rumors are swirling around Carson Wentz. The former North Dakota State Bison quarterback might drop down in the draft this year. The number one overall pick will come down to Wentz or Jared Goff. Whoever doesn’t get the first pick will likely drop down if the Cleveland Browns decide to go in another direction. According to CBS Sports, the San Francisco 49ers might be moving up to the number four selection from the number seven spot. Newly acquired head coach Chip Kelly might be looking for a quarterback if Colin Kaepernick doesn’t work out.

If the Los Angeles Rams decide to select Jared Goff with the first overall pick, Carson Wentz will be the next best quarterback on the board. The Cleveland Browns could go with a defensive player with the second pick. The Browns lost key pieces on the defensive side of the ball. Quarterback isn’t their biggest need. Hue Jackson might be content with Robert Griffin III at the position. Cleveland lost several starters since free agency began.

The San Diego Chargers will be looking to pick up either an offensive lineman or a defensive player with the third overall selection. Many mock drafts have the Chargers selecting Jalen Ramsey, Laremy Tunsil, or DeForest Buckner. San Diego lost long time starting safety Eric Weddle in free agency. Weddle signed with the Baltimore Ravens. Replacing him with Ramsey might be the best option in the long run. The defense was also missing a pass rusher who can get to the quarterback. Drafting a talented defensive end like Buckner could fill the void. The Chargers offensive line was full of injuries all last season. They will need to pick up someone who can protect their franchise quarterback. That’s where Tunsil comes in.

The San Francisco 49ers could possibly trade with the Dallas Cowboys for the fourth overall pick in the NFL Draft if Carson Wentz is still on the board. The Cowboys are not interested in selecting a quarterback this high. The 49ers have the most picks in this year’s draft. Dallas will be able to get more selections and still get what they want with the seventh pick. The Cowboys could still pick Ezekiel Elliott ahead of their NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles.

The San Francisco 49ers could select Carson Wentz as a backup plan if Colin Kaepernick or Blaine Gabbert don’t work out. Kaepernick made too many mistakes last season. That’s why he was benched in favor of Gabbert. The former Missouri Tigers quarterback stepped in and did solid job, but he didn’t win over management. Trading up and selecting Wentz could possibly be a steal for the 49ers. The former North Dakota State Bison could potentially be a franchise quarterback.

Chip Kelly will be looking for a quarterback to run his system. Colin Kaepernick might be a perfect fit for the scheme. The former Nevada Wolfpack quarterback’s future with the team is cloudy at this point. Earlier during the free agency period, there were talks about trading Kaepernick to the Denver Broncos. Blaine Gabbert might be a good fit for Kelly. Unfortunately, Gabbert might not be the future for the San Francisco 49ers. Selecting Carson Wentz would be a perfect fit. He has intelligence, athleticism and a strong arm.

If the San Francisco 49ers do decide to go another route, there are options. They could select Jalen Ramsey, Laremy Tunsil, or DeForest Buckner. The 49ers have many holes to fill. Last season, the secondary was in need of a upgrade. Ramsey could possibly be the missing piece at corner back. The offensive line is another weak point, especially with Alex Boone leaving the 49ers this off season. Arik Armstead didn’t step up to the challenge this season. San Francisco could possibly draft Buckner to compete against Armstead.

The San Francisco 49ers don’t know what is going to happen with Colin Kaepernick. Blaine Gabbert is solid but not a long term solution. If Carson Wentz is still on the board, the 49ers could be tempted to select him due to his potential.
