Billboard Music Awards 2016: The Weeknd’s 19 Nominations, Justin Bieber 12, Adele, Drake & More Get Nods

The Weeknd, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Drake, Selena Gomez, and more are some of the artists who landed multiple nods in the Billboard Music Awards 2016 nominations, which were announced on Monday, April 11.

Canada led the way with nominations, with The Weeknd scoring 19 in 16 fields. These include the Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Songs Sales Artist, and many more.

Hot on The Weeknd’s heels is Justin Bieber, the 22-year-old comeback king, who receives 12 nominations in 11 categories.

Bieber’s nods include Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist, Top Streaming Songs Artist, Top Social Media Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, and Top Streaming Song (Audio), in which the pop icon competes with himself with the mega-hits “Sorry” and “What Do You Mean.”

The heartthrob bags a Top Dance/Electronic songs nod for his Grammy winning “Where Are Ü Now” collaboration with Jack Ü’s Skrillex and Diplo.

Billboard notes that if Justin Bieber could set four BBMA awards this year. First, if he wins six or more BBMA gongs, he will match Garth Brooks’ 19 wins, which currently makes Brooks the highest-honored male in Billboard Music Awards history.

If the “Sorry” singer waltzes home with more than eight trophies, he will overtake Taylor Swift, who currently holds the record of 20 Billboard Music Awards wins to date.

What about Male Artist? If Bieber wins it again, he will be the only artist to have won that category twice.

Finally, the Biebs is the only artist so far to win the Top Social Media Artist Award, which was introduced in 2011, and which he has won five times, in every year. If he does so again, he will break his own record.

Not bad for a guy who was booed at the 2013 Billboard awards and took home a solitary Top Social Media Award last year but came back with his stunning Purpose album last year, racked up three No. 1s, and impressive sales and streaming stats.

Moving on. Drake and Fetty Wap are both nominated 11 times in 10 categories, while Swift and Adele receive eight nods.

Selena Gomez is nominated for Top Female Artist alongside Adele, Ariana Grande, Rihanna, and Swift. She also picks up a Top Social Media Artist Award.

A few hours after the announcements, Justin tweeted thanks for the nominations with a note to his Beliebers. For a full list of Billboard Music Awards 2016 nominations, click the link.
