NBA: Golden State Warriors & Stephen Curry Tie Michael Jordan & Chicago Bulls

With a 92-86 win over the San Antonion Spurs on Sunday night, the Stephen Curry-led Golden State Warriors have tied the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls of the 1995-96 NBA season by winning 72 regular season games. The Warriors have a chance to surpass the Bulls and finish with 73 wins when they host the Memphis Grizzlies (42-38) on Wednesday.

Even though he finished with a game-high 37 points, the most impressive basket of the night for Stephen Curry may have been the 60-footer that he let loose just barely after the third-quarter buzzer. The likely NBA MVP also finished with five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Andre Iguodala had a team-high seven rebounds for the Warriors while coming off the bench, and Klay Thompson contributed 14 points, six rebounds, and two steals.

LaMarcus Aldridge lead the San Antonio Spurs with 24 points, while also grabbing 10 boards after playing 33 minutes. Kawhi Leonard had a game-high 13 rebounds and a game-high three blocks, and was also good for 20 points and a team-high five assists. Off the bench, Manu Ginobili had a team-high three steals to go along with three assists and eight points in just 20 minutes of play.

Whether Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors go on to defeat the Memphis Grizzlies and set a new record at 73 wins, or the Grizzlies pull an upset and the Warriors end the season merely tying the record, the debates and comparisons will undoubtedly go on ad nauseam. Perhaps giving analysts a break from the Michael Jordan/Kobe Bryant and Jordan/LeBron conversations, the new question will be whether the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors are a better team than the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls.

A win against Memphis on Wednesday would sure help sway the argument in favor of Curry and the Warriors.

Of course, 16 teams will be given a clean slate when the NBA Playoffs begin on April 16. Having already secured the Western Conference Championship, the Golden State Warriors already have home-court advantage all the way to the NBA Finals, assuming they aren’t eliminated along the way. They will either play the Dallas Mavericks, Utah Jazz or Houston Rockets in the first round. They would most likely advance to play either the Oklahoma City Thunder or Los Angeles Clippers in the second round.

Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs have won the Southwest Division and locked in second place in the Western Conference. In the first round of the post-season, they will face whichever of the Mavericks, Jazz or Rockets that end up in seventh place in the Western Conference. Assuming all four of the 1-4 seeds advance to the second round, the Spurs would play whichever of the Thunder or Clippers that finish the season third in the West. If they get another shot at the Warriors, it will be in the Western Conference Finals.

When the Golden State Warriors try to set the record on Wednesday against the Memphis Grizzlies, coverage of the game will air on ESPN (as well as FOX Sports Southeast) beginning at 9:30 CST. So far this season, the Warriors are 3-0 against the Grizzlies.
