Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Carson Wentz Remains A Possibility For The Cowboys, According To Latest NFL Mock Draft

While Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has stated that the team will not draft a quarterback with the No. 4 overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft, rumors are now coming out that the team could be in the market for one of this year’s top signal callers. After finishing with a disappointing 4-12 record last season, the Cowboys are looking to bounce back in the mediocre NFC East. Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is still one of the top quarterbacks in the league, but his health is becoming a serious concern. For that reason, North Dakota State Bison quarterback Carson Wentz is now viewed as a real possibility for the Cowboys to draft with pick No. 4.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, the Cowboys have recently been linked to California Golden Bears quarterback Jared Goff, Memphis Tigers quarterback Paxton Lynch, Ohio State Buckeyes running back Ezekiel Elliott, and Wentz. While the rumors linking Goff and Wentz to the Cowboys have slowed down over the past few weeks, Lynch has emerged as the top target. The thinking is that the Cowboys could trade down in the first round in order to draft Lynch and pick up more draft picks in the process. While this remains a possibility, the Cowboys are now rumored to view Wentz as the top quarterback in the draft.

As reported by Blogging The Boys, Wentz is even in the Cowboys’ top-three ranked players in the entire draft.

“Part one of this – Wentz is their top QB – is pretty believable. The battle between Wentz and Jared Goff as the top QB has been going on for the past month and the winner is in the eye of the beholder. So the Cowboys liking Wentz is fine. Having him in their top three is more contentious, because if that’s so, then the Cowboys would have to go against following their board if they don’t draft Wentz at number four, if he is available. Jerry Jones made noise about not drafting a QB at pick four, but if Wentz is in their top three, they really would need to draft him if he’s available. If you believe in a QB that highly, you need to grab him.”

If the Cowboys truly covet Wentz, the only team in their way is going to be the Cleveland Browns. After signing Robert Griffin III, many analysts believed that the Browns were out of the running for one of the top quarterbacks. While they still might be, there is a chance that the Browns go with Wentz with the No. 2 overall pick.

As reported by Sportsnaut, there is even a chance that the Cowboys will trade with the Tennessee Titans in order to acquire the No. 1 overall pick. While it is much more likely that the Cowboys remain at No. 4, a trade is very possible if Jones views Wentz as a possible franchise quarterback.

Romo will turn 36-years-old in a few weeks, and it is time that the Cowboys start searching for his replacement. Jones has stated in the past that he thinks Romo can play another five seasons, but he has to have a backup plan in place. The issue with drafting Wentz in the first round is that he is not going to want to sit for four or five years before Romo retires. Using a first round pick on a player that you do not plan on playing for 4 or 5 years would also be foolish on the Cowboys’ part.

With the 2016 NFL draft only a few weeks away, rumors will continue to link the Dallas Cowboys to North Dakota State Bison quarterback Carson Wentz. While the organization has claimed they will not draft a quarterback in the first round, Wentz may be too tempting to pass up on if he is still on the board when the Cowboys pick at No. 4.
