Tottenham Hotspur continue their longshot push for a Barclays Premier League title Sunday when they face Manchester United in a match that will stream live from White Hart Lane, a match that also sees United making a drive of their own to crack the top four and secure their return to the UEFA Champions League after a humbling exit at the group stage this year.
But while Manchester United, even after their struggles of the past few years, remain the most successful team in the 25-year history of the Premier League, taking the title an incredible 13 times, Spurs have never won the Premier League — and won the former First Division only twice in the 108 since Tottenham first joined England’s Football League.
Unfortunately for Tottenham, a 1-1 draw against Liverpool last weekend, coupled with a victory for unlikely table-toppers Leicester City, left second-place Spurs seven points off the top with six games left, including the showdown with Manchester United Sunday afternoon in North London.
Nonetheless, Tottenham Manager Mauricio Pochettino refuses to concede the title to the Leicester upstarts — who prior to last season, had not played in the Premier League at all since 2004.
“I believe, I always believe,” Pochettino told reporters on Friday. “We have to win every game now, but I believe, when I see the players and the mentality that we have. If it is not possible, then it is not possible, that is football. But we are very confident and trust in ourselves. We are very strong. Football is a game you can win, lose or draw. But we believe. That is the most important thing.”

As Pochettino indicated, the game is a must-win for Tottenham if they hope to take the title away from Leicester, who face a highly winnable game on Sunday against relegation-battling Sunderland — a game that will already be in the books by the time of the late-afternoon kickoff at White Hart Lane.
But United has not lost away to Spurs, incredibly, since 2001. And when the two teams met to open the Premier League campaign back on August 8, Manchester United handed Tottenham a 1-0 defeat. Tottenham Hotspur have lost only three games in the Premier League since that season-opening setback.
A win for Manchester United, however, is also essential. The three points would put them even with fourth-place, crosstown rivals Manchester City. United would trail on goal difference, but at least would be in prime position to overtake City and claim that final Champions League spot.
