In a recent appearance on CNN's The Lead with Jake Tapper, John Podesta, Hillary Clinton's campaign chair, said he believes the "American people can handle the truth about aliens." He told Jake Tapper he believes it is time for the government to do something to end the air of secrecy and conspiracy about UFOs and extraterrestrial life by releasing all classified files on the subject.
Podesta told Tapper that if Hillary Clinton is elected as president she would work for the release of all classified UFO files and classified files about Area 51, the top-secret remote detachment of the Edward Air Force Base in Nevada, where alien aircraft allegedly recovered from the 1947 Roswell, New Mexico, UFO crash is being stored secretly for reverse-engineering research, according to UFO conspiracy theorists.Podesta said, "I think that is a commitment she intends to keep and that I intend to hold her to."
"The U.S. government could do a much better job in answering the quite legitimate questions that people have about what's going on with unidentified aerial phenomena," he continued.
He said, "What I've talked to the secretary about, and what she's said now in public, is that if she's elected president, when she gets into office, she'll ask for as many records as the United States federal government has to be declassified."
When asked if he believes the government is withholding vital information about existence of alien life, he said, "That's for the public to judge once they've seen all the evidence that the U.S. government has."
Commenting on his personal beliefs about the subject, he said, "There are a lot of planets out there... the American people can handle the truth."
Podesta's interest in extraterrestrial life and UFOs is well-known. He made headlines after serving as special adviser to President Barack Obama with a tweet, "Finally, my biggest failure of 2014: Once again not securing the #disclosure of the UFO files. #thetruthisstilloutthere cc: @NYTimesDowd."
His latest comments come after Ms. Clinton promised during a media interview that she would "get to the bottom" of persistent rumors that the U.S. government has had contact with extraterrestrial beings and that alien technology is being stored secretly at Area 51.
A prominent UFO blogger, Scott C. Waring, has expressed confidence that Podesta is sincere in his commitment to get all classified UFO files released. But he expressed doubts that he would be able to force Clinton to release all relevant classified documents."It's cool that John wants to reveal the truth. He has drive to get to what he thinks the public is ready for and wants to hear," Waring said. "I just don't know if he has the pull to push Hillary hard enough to do it. If it is true, and Hillary really releases all, and I mean all files, then it would be a game changer."
Many enthusiasts remain skeptical about Clinton's promise, saying she is making promises only because she is desperate to win the presidential election.
"Ms Clinton would say anything now to gain the U.S. exec seat after losing her last bid several years ago," one UFO enthusiast said.
Others pointed to the fact that President Bill Clinton had also shown interest in the matter, but eventually did not release any files. One enthusiast argued that Bill Clinton's failure was due to resistance from intelligence officials who advised him to abandon the effort.
"Yes former President Bill Clinton was [also] interested UFOs," the enthusiast said, "but yet did not do much regarding disclosure because [officials] just may have advised him to 'keep your mouth shut' on this matter... or else."
The enthusiast concluded, "So expect Ms Clinton to follow her husband foot steps in this matter if she is elected."
